A sellout crowd of more than 700 helped the University of the Incarnate Word celebrate the 30th anniversary of its annual Cutting Edge Fiesta® Fashion Show. This year’s event presented by Mercedes-Benz of San Antonio was held today, April 19 at the Marriott Rivercenter Hotel.
The annual event, produced entirely by students, featured designs illustrated, designed and constructed by students. UIW senior Cassidy Klein swept the competition with her collection Sweet & Sassy designed for pre-teen girls. She went home with the 2010 Best of Show, Best Design, Best Construction and Best Collection awards. Klein’s inspiration was creating fashions that were “fun, colorful and most importantly – age appropriate.” The Best of Show is determined by the garment scored highest by all of the judges. Winners received specially designed awards courtesy of event sponsor Tiffany & Co. The Best of Show winner also received a Janome Embellisher Machine courtesy of Grome’s Sewing Machine Company.
The event welcomed back former student designer Jacob Jude ’03 BA currently a design director for Macy’s Merchandising Group. Jude showed a collection of his most recent designs.
The Cutting Edge Fiesta® Fashion Show is an official Fiesta® Event and was attended by Miss Fiesta, the Queen of Soul, la Reina de la Feria de las Flores and featured a surprise guest appearance by the court of El Rey Feo.
In addition to Mercedes-Benz of San Antonio other presenting sponsors included Tiffany & Co., Gayle & Tom Benson and the Watson Foundation. All proceeds from the show fund scholarships for UIW’s fashion management students. This year, nine students received scholarships thanks to the generosity of our sponsors and supporters of the annual Cutting Edge Fiesta® Fashion Show.
