More than 5,500 guests joined UIW President Dr. Louis J. Agnese Jr., as he officially kicked off the holiday season on Saturday, Nov. 21 by flipping the switch illuminating the UIW campus with more than one million twinkling lights. The campus lighting was the final event in a fun-filled evening at UIW’s annual Light the Way holiday celebration. The event which began more than two decades ago is the university’s gift to the community. The campus will be open for self-guided tours through January 6.
Special guests included Congressman Charlie Gonzalez, Mayor Julián Castro, Archbishop José Gomez and H-E-B Director of Public Affairs Dya Campos. As part of the evening’s festivities, Dr. Agnese announced the creation of the Archbishop José Gomez Scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded to any student graduating from a Catholic high school beginning May 2010 who choose to attend UIW. Graduates from Incarnate Word High School and St. Anthony Catholic High School, UIW Brainpower Connection schools, will be awarded $3,000 per year ($12,000 over four years) and graduates of other Catholic high schools will be awarded $2,000 per year ($8,000 over four years) to attend UIW.
The 2009 Light the Way activities were kicked-off in UIW’s McDermott Convocation Center where sounds of holiday music provided by the UIW Chorale and the choirs from Incarnate Word High School, St. Anthony Catholic School and St. Peter Prince of Apostles Catholic School filled the air. The St. Anthony Catholic High School jazz band also entertained the crowd along with headliner Tejano Music Legend Patsy Torres who closed out the event. Highlights of the evening included a visit from the UIW Cardinal and Santa Claus who presented gifts on behalf of the community to the Elf Louise organization.
After the official switch was flipped, mariachis led the candlelight procession of guests through the campus and to Central Market H-E-B for a complimentary reception. The 2009 Light the Way holiday celebration is sponsored by UIW and H-E-B. Make plans to attend the 2010 Light the Way event scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 20.
