Founded in 2009, the Marching Cardinals (formerly known as the Cardinal Band) (MUEN 1140: Marching Cardinals) has already established itself as one of the most visible, energetic spirit organizations on the UIW campus. Comprised of students studying a wide variety of academic majors, the Marching Cardinals perform at every home football game, select performances off-campus, and the annual "Light the Way" ceremony.
Currently the ensemble rehearses in the Band/Orchestra Hall and Benson Stadium on
Monday and Wednesday evenings in the Fall from 6:00-8:45 PM. The band also rehearses on Game Day Saturdays in Benson Stadium. The band typically plays three shows a year as entertainment for
the UIW Football Game Day experience.

Updated July 17, 2017
Membership in the Marching Cardinals is automatic for any successfully enrolled student to the University of the Incarnate Word. High school and/or university marching experience strongly suggested for members, but not required. Auditions for the group are held on a case-by-case basis and are typically used to determine part placement for certain sections (i.e., clarinet, trumpet, trombone, and drum line) on an as-needed basis.
Drum Line and Color Guard auditions will be held prior to Summer Band Camp. These will be used to determine placement on the line and to ascertain what instrument is the best fit for the student. At this time there is no front ensemble or pit percussion section.
Any student (new or returning) wishing to participate in the Marching Cardinals at
the University of the Incarnate Word will be eligible for a tuition credit starting
at the amount of $1000 for woodwinds, brass, and percussion, and $2000 for Color Guard. Tuition credits maybe raised or lowered based on needs of the program and the willingness
of the student to participate in multiple ensembles. Contact the director for more
Furthermore, these highly competitive tuition credits are awarded in addition to any academic or departmental awards from the university. These are awarded at the discretion of the Director of Bands as a way to reward band members for their commitment to the band department.
The Marching Cardinals rehearse in the state-of-the-art Music Building just opened on the UIW campus. The 2,200 sq. ft. facility contains an acoustically-sound rehearsal space plus storage for uniforms, instruments, music, and instructional technology.
It is not necessary to be a music major. Basic rhythm, technical facility, and high
school marching experience (which is strongly suggested, but not mandatory) are the
most important qualifications for membership.
Will I have time in my schedule to join the Marching Cardinals?
In high school, you spend up to 7 hours per day in class - in college, that number
drops at least in half - you'll be in class only 3-4 hours per day. This leaves 3-4
hours free compared to your current high school schedule! The Marching Cardinals meets
only twice a week from 6:00-8:45 PM on Mondays and Wednesdays and in the mornings
on Saturday game days. College band is supposed to be the reward for your service
in high school band – our focus is on entertaining the fans, students, and alumni
of UIW while supporting Cardinal Athletics.
Is it extremely difficult to join the Marching Cardinals?
ALL BRASS AND WOODWIND PLAYERS are automatically accepted into the Marching Cardinals
- auditions for part assignments are determined on an as needed basis. The Drum Line
and Color Guard has an audition week prior to school starting. During Band Camp, students
will be taught basic drill and music, and a review of marching fundamentals will be
covered for veterans. Several meals will also be provided during camp.
What instruments are used in the Marching Cardinals?
Instruments used in the Marching Cardinals include piccolo, clarinet, all saxophones,
trumpet, mellophone, trombone, baritone, sousaphone, and percussion. Only tenor/bari
saxophones, mellophones, baritones, sousaphones, and percussion are provided by UIW. Color
Guard is also available.
How many performances are scheduled this year?
The Marching Cardinals will perform at every Cardinal Football home game; other select
campus events; exhibitions at Regional and State Marching competitions; and either
the Battle of the Flowers or Fiesta Flambeau parades in the spring. Travel to away
games may occur in subsequent years.
Can I participate in R.O.T.C. and enroll in MUEN 1140: Marching Cardinals?
At this time, students wishing to participate in R.O.T.C. programs are suggested to not enroll in marching band at UIW. Unfortunately, the R.O.T.C.'s M, T, and W class schedule and frequent Saturday trainings throughout the Fall prohibit adequate participation in band activities.
Do I have to live in the residence halls to be a member of the Marching Cardinals?
No, you do not have to live in the residence halls to be a member of the Marching Cardinals.
Are there other performance opportunities in the UIW Band program?
Yes! There is the Cardinal Red Basketball Band, which will meet beginning in November.
Auditions for this 29-member group will be held in October.
The UIW Wind Ensemble will begin meeting soon after football season ends. In the Fall, The ensemble will meet Monday and Wednesdays during marching band time. In the Spring, the Wind Ensemble class meeting time is Mondays/Wednesdays 4:30-6:00 PM and Fridays from 1:30-2:30 PM. While all UIW students are welcome to join, chair auditions for this concert ensemble will be held in January. You do not need to be in either the marching band or basketball band to participate in the UIW Wind Ensemble.
How many shows do the Marching Cardinals perform?
The Marching Cardinals will perform three (3) shows this year plus a traditional Pre-Game
show. Music is chosen from a variety of genres including Pop, Rock, R&B, Funk, and
Patriotic selections. While visual movement is important, drill will be easy to learn
and clean. Our focus will be on excellence in musical performance while also being
