Bachelor of Arts in Music with emphasis in Performance:

  1. Prepare two musical selections in whichever instrument (including voice) you intend to present your senior recital (see guidelines for specific instruments/voice below). Be advised that the performance emphasis at UIW concentrates on classical repertoire; Jazz studies may be pursued through elective credits.
  2. All students are required to take the Theory/Aural Skills Placement Test which will be available online in the very near future. For more information about this test, visit the following link: Theory Diagnostic Test

Guidelines for specific instruments and voice

Brass, Strings,

Winds, Guitar,

Percussion

Two selections from the classical repertoire in contrasting styles (for example: etudes, movements of a sonata, etc.). Level should be at least intermediate. (Recommendation for Texas students: UIL Ensemble Grade 4 or 5, or UIL Solo Grade 1 or 2.)

Major & minor scales: Highly recommended.

If you have experience with Jazz, one of your selections may be in this style.

Voice

Two selections from the classical repertoire in contrasting styles (for example: Early Italian arias such as sebben crudele, Schubert’s Heiden roslein, Copland’s Simple Gifts, or similar).

Memorization is highly recommended.
Piano

Two selections from the classical repertoire in contrasting styles (for example: Clementi sonatinas, Chopin preludes, Bach inventions, 20th century repertoire, or similar). Level should be at least intermediate. (Recommendation for Texas students: UIL Solo Grade 1 or 2.)

Memorization is highly recommended.

Major & minor scales: Highly recommended
