Frequently Asked Questions About Community Service

What counts as service?

Helping people in need through non-profit organizations that are consistent with the Mission of UIW.
You may not be paid.
Internships, practicums, clinicals or earning course credit do not count.

What is the difference between On and Off Campus service?

On-campus service includes such events as Light the Way, Phonathon or assisting with Baccalaureate Mass. Please note: you may do 15 hours on campus; however, all hours may be done off campus.

Off campus service includes anything off campus - including The Village of Incarnate Word - the retirement community adjacent to the University run by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word.

What do I do if I'm not sure if my hours will count?

Conact the Campus Ministry Office PRIOR to doing your community service if there are any questions regarding the work you are interesed in doing. 829-3128

When are the graduation deadline for service hours?

Dates change each semester. For exact dates check with Suzanne Cook in the Registrar's Office.

What things should I know BEFORE going to a site of service?

Ask for the volunteer coordinator at the site you choose. This person knows where help is needed and can place you quickly.

If you take a break from volunteering, have the coordinator sign your service form before you leave. Many non-profit agencies have a high employee turnover rate. The same coordinator may not be there when you return.

Make a copy, make a copy, make a copy of your service form. It is always wise to have a back-up of your service documentations in the event that your form is lost or misfiled.

Where to pick up forms:
You make pick up forms from the Registrar's Office - AD 129 or the Campus Ministry Office - AD 147..

Where to turn in forms:
Turn in your service form to the Registrar's Office - AD 129 or mail: Registrar's Office 4301 Broadway CPO 304 San Antonio, TX 78209
If you mail, make sure it is the original and not a copy.

Reasons not to procrastinate:
Most agencies require orientation and background checks that may take 2-3 days.

Your busy schedule may only allow you to perform service during the weekend. Most organizations fill up quickly or do not operate on the weekend.

Completing hours early ensures you are doing something you enjoy, rather than having to do a job because you waited too long.

Most agencies have a grand fundraiser or gala. By volunteering early you may be invited to attend the event as a volunteer or guest.

Why volunteer?

Other than it is required, look at it this way…

  • It is an opportunity to network, meet other people, and you never know who you will meet.
  • Many organizations allow children to volunteer. This is an excellent opportunity to earn hours and spend time with your family.
  • It is an opportunity to have time alone away from your family.
  • Learn what is going on in San Antonio and the agencies making a difference in the community.
  • If your thinking about changing jobs, it is an excellent opportunity to find out what you enjoy doing.
