Manner of Raphael, Italian, 1483-1520
“Madonna of the Goldfinch”, circa 1700
Raphael was perhaps the Italian painter who most completely typifies the classical era of the High Renaissance in its idealistic naturalness and standardized types of character. This particular painting is a variation of one of the most celebrated and perfect Madonnas of Raphael’s Florentine period. Although the original painting also features the Christ Child and St. John caressing a goldfinch, this 18th century rendition accurately portrays the serenity of Mary as an endearing mother.
