Carlo Crivelli, Italian, 1430-1495
“Madonna and Child Enthroned”, 1482
A provincial artist whose production was almost exclusively sacred in subject and consisted mostly of compartmentalized altarpieces and small panels of the Madonna and Child. This particular work is the preparatory painting for an altarpiece of the Dominican Church at Camerino, now in the Brera Gallery in Milan. Note how the artist had difficulty with handling of the goldfinch in the composition and, in fact, did not sketch in the trailing edge of the right wing.
