Brevaraium Antiphonarii, Spanish, 1570 – 1600
Gregorian Chant Leaf, Psalms 146 and 147

An original hand-scribed leaf on animal parchment from the Brevaraium Antiphonarii. This manuscript contained hymns, psalms and lessons for use in the service at Vespers, including Gregorian chants. This monophonic, unaccompanied sacred music of the Roman Catholic Church originated in the 6th century, and was named after Pope Gregory the Great. The leaf features nine illuminated initials in red ink, and two knotwork (cadel) initials in black ink. Includes music on a five line stave, with text from Psalms 146 & 147.
