Department of Mathematics Programs
Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics:
The liberal arts curriculum is designed to increase the mathematical power of students. This B.A. program emphasizes concepts, procedures, and connections. All courses develop reasoning abilities along with skills in precise communication of concepts. Problem solving is addressed throughout the program. Mathematics majors are will prepared for jobs requiring expertise in quantitative analysis and problem solving, and for a wide variety of graduate and professional programs.
Requirement:
- A minimum of 30 Semester hours in mathematics (at least 18 upper division), to include the following:
Math 2312 Calculus I
Math 2313 Calculus II
Math 3320 Foundation of Higher Mathematics
Math 3325 Abstract Algebra and Number theory - A minor in an approved discipline or an approved interdisciplinary minor.
Minor in Mathematics
18 semester hours of mathematics, to include MATH 2312, Calculus I, MATH 2313, Calculus II, and 9 hours of upper division mathematics courses.
Master of Sciences in Mathematics
The M.S. degree provides a broad background in mathematics, including Real and Complex Analysis, Abstract Algebra, and Topology. Specializations may involve pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and computer science. Candidates for this degree are expected to have knowledge and skill in the use of computers.

Requirements for the MS degree in Mathematics
Plan A: Non-thesis option.
- A minimum of 36 semester hours of graduate mathematics and minor courses. At least 30 hours must be in mathematics, including 12 hours from graduate level abstract algebra, real and complex analysis, and topology.
- A minimum GPA of 3.0 must be maintained. A candidate will be removed from the program if a grade of C or lower is received in two courses.
- A Comprehensive Examination or Capstone project is required. It will be evaluated by the supervisory committee which will consists of at least three faculty members, appointed by the graduate program advisor in consultation with the student.
Plan B: Thesis option.
Requirements 1 and 2 above apply with up to 6 semester hours in mathematics earned with the thesis. The thesis and its defense will be evaluated by the supervisory committee which will consists of at least three faculty members, appointed by the graduate program advisor in consultation with the student. One member of the supervisory committee will supervise the thesis research.
