Library Services

The J.E. and L.E. Mabee Library at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is located at the heart of the main campus.  The library is open seven days a week and has librarians and knowledgeable staff available to answer your questions via phone, chat, email or face-to-face.

Current UIW students, faculty and staff using a valid ID, may borrow books, audiovisuals and other items.   They can access electronic resources using the computers on the first floor of the library or connect with their own laptop or a borrowed Surface Pro using the wireless network.  At home or work, electronic resources can be accessed using a UIW network username and password.

In addition, the library offers quiet spaces to study, group study rooms and meeting rooms.

Reference Services

Reference services are provided to the UIW community via text/chat, email and telephone using our Ask the Library Service, as well as in person at the reference desk staffed by librarians and trained staff. The types of help that users can expect from reference include, but are not limited to:

  • Giving brief factual answers to specific questions, including citation questions;
  • Assisting in locating books and videos in the library;
  • Suggesting resources including journal databases and reliable websites;
  • Providing referrals to other libraries or organizations as needed and
  • Advising on information search strategies.

In-depth reference questions may require a reference librarian to email a response to the user or an individual research consultation is available for more extensive questions.
