Banner Upgrade

The Enterprise Applications team in the Information Resources Division is planning for a major upgrade to Student Self-Serve Banner applications and to software modules used by all UIW administrative offices. The upgrade, previously marketed as Banner XE, is referred to as Banner 9.  Banner 9’s improvements will be welcome news to the UIW community.  Banner logoStudents use BannerWeb from MyWord portal to register for classes, pick up a class schedule, pay their invoice, view and accept their financial aid package, and view their grades. Besides enhancements to these functional services, the new platform promises a more robust and responsive design that is expected to work well with mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets.

Banner vendor Ellucian announced that the current version of Banner will enter a sustaining support stage on December 31, 2018.  What that means is that system enhancements, patches, fixes, and regulatory updates to the platform will not be available after that date.  UIW will not delay to meet this deadline. The Enterprise Applications team has been keeping abreast of Banner 9 developments and starting this fall, the project will go full force with an aggressive project schedule to phase in upgrades over the next 18 months. On-campus demonstrations of the new platform will be arranged and interested students, faculty, and staff will have opportunities to see what it looks like and what it will offer in terms of new services or old services redesigned.  Additionally, faculty and staff now have access to a university-wide licensed electronic library of Banner instructional content.  The On-Demand Subscription Library (ODSL) features electronic training modules for users of Banner 8 and Banner 9 platforms. Banner 8 resources continue to be helpful to new and existing UIW employees. And as UIW migrates software modules to the new Banner 9 platform, ODSL will be a valuable resource for faculty and staff – UIW staff are encouraged to work with their supervisors in scheduling time to use the resource effectively.
