Effective Saturday, Sept. 23, all outgoing 210 area-code calls must include all 10 digits. This is a result of the newly implemented 726 area code for the San Antonio region.

UIW users calling external numbers will have to dial 9 then 210 – XXX – XXXX.  All internal UIW calls can still use the four-digit extension.  Also of note, no existing numbers should change and "726' area-code numbers will not be issued until the end of October.

This process is part of the 726 "overlay" implemented by the telephone companies to handle the increasing amount of phone numbers needed by cell phones and other customers. To meet this demand, a new area code is overlaid over the existing one. In this case, 210 will coexist with 726. In order to make this work, users will now have to dial the full 10 numbers for local calls that will include either area code.

Learn more about this process at the Public Utility Commission of Texas' website here: http://www.puc.texas.gov/industry/maps/areacodes/TxAreaCodes.aspx
