On Friday, April 19, the Honors Council, faculty and students gathered for the annual awards dinner. This year the theme was a Black & White Masquerade and everyone looked absolutely wonderful. Students received awards for scholarship, service and senior projects.
The Honors Program at the University of the Incarnate Word adds a level of intellectual inquiry to stimulate curious minds. It provides a challenging curriculum and insightful programs, woven together with the concept of social justice. Included are co-curricular programs in all types of artistic and academic fields and service learning opportunities in and out of the classroom. Ours is an interdisciplinary Honors Program for students with excellent academic credentials, a love of learning and a desire to make a positive difference in the world.
One of the major benefits of the Honors Program is the honors classes. In the Honors Program the students like to be challenged, so the Honors Program likes to challenge us. Being surrounded by so many honors students in class brought out wisdom inside me that I never knew I had. --Tin

My favorite part of being in Honors is the smallness of it. In Honors we’re really close and we know everybody. We do lots of things together academically, socially, and in service projects . --Brittany
What Do Honors Students Do?
Within the program students have created a learning community in which they are comfortable sharing ideas, exploring new topics and activities, and just having fun together. Our curriculum fulfills requirements of the university's core curriculum; since all degree programs incorporate these requirements, we can accommodate majors across campus. Read our latest newsletter and check out the Student Activities area to see what we're up to. Our Facebook page will give you a taste of what's happening now. Many of our students are Resident Assistants in on-campus housing, athletes, members and officers of student organizations, and participate in study abroad. Every semester someone is learning in a foreign country!
In addition, students completing their senior projects look for opportunities to present their results at conferences around the country and/or submit articles to professional journals. Mollimichelle Cabeldue, pictured here with her research poster at the National Collegiate Honors Council conference, is an example of that. She has presented her project at several national and regional conferences, winning recognition which will pay off in her graduate school applications.
