SAN ANTONIO – Organizers for the 2017 UIW Business Plan Competition held a Kickoff Mentors Lunch last Friday in the new Student Engagement Center, where students met the San Antonio business leaders who will serve as mentors during the competition.
Some of the mentors are members of the HEBSBA Advisory Board. Others are with San Antonio TechBoosters – a volunteer organization that assists technology driven startups and entrepreneurs.
Mentors from the Advisory Board are Peter J. Holt, Jorge Canavati, William Galbreath and Brad Bowen. Mentors from San Antonio Tech Boosters are Neil k. Vail, Ph.D., John M. Taboada, William Quirk and Rene Gallegos.
They work in various industries, including legal services, engineering, retail, global logistics, banking, health care and medical equipment.
Dr. Jose Moreno, HEBSBA finance faculty member, said the role of the mentors is invaluable.
“This group of professionals will help students in the Business Plan Competition to improve their business ideas in order to transform them to feasible business projects,” Dr. Moreno said. “It is a great benefit to the students participating because they will have business experts giving them comments and feedback about their business models.”
Forty-five students, making up 25 teams, are participating in this year's competition. The students have attended two workshops so far this semester as they work to develop their business plans. The students selected to move on to the second phase of the competition will be announced on Friday, Oct. 20. During this phase, they’ll work with the mentors to fine tune their plans for final submission at the end of the semester. The winners will be awarded cash prizes and will present their winning ideas at a ceremony on Jan. 24, 2018.
