(Sept. 14, 2014) - Who says financial planning isn't a competition? University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) will be one of six universities participating in the National Association of Government Defined Contribution Administrators' (NAGDCA) Retirement Knowledge Quiz Bowl. The Quiz Bowl is part of the NAGDCA's 2014 conference held September 15-16th in San Antonio.
According to NAGDCA, the Quiz Bowl’s objective is to “promote the profession of financial planning and advance knowledge in the field of public sector retirement plans.” Students will compete in a “game-show style” event, which places teams head-to-head as they showcase their financial know-how. Teams will be faced with questions from the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and Certified Retirement Counselor (CRC) exams. The first and second place teams will each receive a cash prize and trophy for the school.
UIW will need to be well prepared as all six participating teams rank in the top thirty of financial planning programs in the country. Competitors include: the University of Missouri, University of Georgia, William Paterson University, Utah Valley University, and Virginia Tech. “We will have some stiff competition this year,” said Assistant Professor of Finance Dr. Timothy Griesdorn. “It is quite an honor to compete at this level.”
The four member squad: Ryan Ortiz, Joseph Castillo, David Rodriguez, and Diego Bravo Alvarez received the bulk of their training in Dr. Alicia Rodriguez de Rubio’s Retirement Planning course, which was held the previous Spring semester. Although it has been over four months since the team completed the course, Rodriguez de Rubio is impressed by how much knowledge the team has retained: “With the competition so early in the Fall semester we’ve had little time to organize; I am very proud of our students for being so well prepared to take on this challenge.”
The competition begins Monday, September 15th at the downtown Hyatt Regency Hotel at 5:00 pm.
Update – September 15th:
UIW defeats teams from Mizzou, Georgia, Virginia Tech, and William Patterson to advance to the final round. Students will face off against Utah Valley University at 1:45 Tuesday for first place. No matter what the outcome, these students have represented UIW and the HEBSBA well and we are all very proud. Go Cardinals!
Update – September 16th:
UIW comes in second place! Utah Valley University pulls out the win in the final question, putting them ahead of UIW by just two points. Congratulations to Ryan, Joseph, David, and Diego for a great performance versus tough competition!
