(Nov. 14, 2014) – As 2015 approaches, the H-E-B School of Business & Administration (HEBSBA) is preparing for the future. Two new certification programs have been added under the umbrella of the HEBSBA: financial planning and social media communications for nonprofits. Both certifications serve a growing need.
As masses of Baby Boomers close in on retirement, financial advisors are in high-demand. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects the occupational growth rate for financial advisors to climb 27% over the next decade, well above the average growth rate of 11% for all occupations. The problem? Many current financial advisors are also members of the Boomer generation, leaving a void of candidates to take over the ranks. The HEBSBA understands the need and is now adding a piece to assist in solving this financial puzzle.
In late October, the HEBSBA registered with the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. (CFPBoard) to provide a new graduate certification program in financial planning. The HEBSBA has met all seventy-eight topics outlined in the board’s criteria. “We are excited to begin our partnership with the CFP Board,” said Associate Professor of Finance Dr. Alicia Rodriguez de Rubio. “We look forward to providing quality education to those interested in pursuing the CFP Certification.”
The Financial Planning Certification is the only on-campus certification offered in San Antonio. Courses will be held in the new state-of-the-art Financial Resource Center and utilize instructional technologies, such as Morningstar Direct, to enhance the curriculum. The program will follow an executive format with courses beginning in early January.
The nonprofit sector is also experiencing an evolution. According to a 2014 survey conducted by the Case Foundation, 74% of nonprofits turn to social media to connect with their target audience, but only 53% are following best practices of posting issue-centric content. This has left a critical vacuum between the organization and its donors.
The HEBSBA received a nod from the San Antonio Area Foundation for the school’s new Social Media Communications Certification. The Social Predictive Analytics Institute (SPAn), led by Professor of Management Dr. David Vequist, was established to assist non-profits in developing, implementing, and assessing strategic social media campaigns through the use of predictive analytics.
Through practical instruction, SPAn provides non-profits with the foundational knowledge to achieve their vision, while mapping efficient tactics for developing marketing plans and assessments. “The institute will be the intersection between social media and predictive analytics,” said Vequist. “The social media certification is a unique learning resource for nonprofit professionals.” SPAn hopes to expand their reach by offering additional certifications geared towards the healthcare sector and developing a concentration for the MBA and BBA degrees. Sessions are set to begin January 2015.
