FAQ's

Where can I find community service events that would help me meet the graduation requirement at UIW?

  • One of the main tasks for the Ettling Center for Civic Leadership is to assist and facilitate community service for all students. We invite you to visit the calendar on this website as well as setting up a ‘profile’ in OrgSync (on your My Word dashboard). Finally, we would be more than happy to visit with you to answer any questions. Therefore, feel free to email (ccl@uiwtx.edu) call us at 210.283.6423 or come by the office located on the UIW Main Campus, Administration Building, Room 158.

Regarding the 45 hours of community service required for graduation at UIW, would donating blood or platelets count?

  • Yes, donating blood and/or platelets would count toward the community service graduation requirement. Please be sure to have the Community Service Form filled out and completed.

I heard from a friend that some of the 45 hours of community service have to be done off campus?

  • There is no longer any type of “On” or “Off” campus requirement. Students only need to complete the hours prior to applying for graduation.

I helped clean a business after a recent flood/storm, would that count as community service?

  • We are glad that you took the time and effort to assist a community member, although this particular task would not fulfill the requirement of community service. Should you need assistance in finding a Community Based Organization or other not-for-profit organization that would meet the community service criteria, please feel free to call, email or visit us at your convenience: (ccl@uiwtx.edu) / 210.283.6423 or come by the office located on the UIW Main Campus, Administration Building, Room 158.

I am in the ADCAP/UIW Online program at UIW, of which it is difficult to make events during the work day, are there events on the weekends where I can fulfill the community service requirement?

  • One of the main focuses of the Ettling Center is to assist students with available opportunities to conduct community service in the Greater San Antonio area. We are located in room 158 of the Administration Building and would be more than happy to visit with you to discuss the various opportunities currently available.

I served in Afghanistan as a member of the Navy and was wondering if any of my prior experience could count toward the community service requirement for graduation?

  • As a result of your service to our nation as a Veteran, you may be able to use some of the service that you conducted as a member of the Military Service. If you conducted service with your branch of military within the last 5 years (NOTE: 5 years prior to enrollment in ADCAP/UIW Online); outside one's home; not for pay; as an individual or with a group; in conjunction with nonprofit, governmental, and community-based organizations; supervised or with a contact person who can verify service completed (If Military, a copy of an evaluation report to verify/confirm completion of service activity or copy of certificate of service).

I noticed that Veteran’s may count some of their community service they obtained while in the service, five years prior to enrolling at UIW, would I be able to do the same as an ADCAP or UIW Online student?

  • Yes, you may be able to use some of the service hours that you conducted within the last 5 years (NOTE: 5 years prior to enrollment in ADCAP/UIW Online); outside one's home; not for pay; as an individual or with a group; in conjunction with nonprofit, governmental, and community-based organizations; supervised or with a contact person who can verify service completed (If of certificate of service).
