This was the Call for Proposals for March 31, 2017.  These will be similar in future years.

A Call for Proposals

In the week that UIW commemorates the Annunciation, remembering Mary’s willingness to serve and a day special to the Incarnate Word Sisters, we invite you to the first “Faculty Service Learning Showcase.” Come present your proposal or join us to get ideas that could help you and your students.

Presentations may take the following forms:

1. Podium presentations for 10 minutes with 5 minutes for questions. (Projection available for PowerPoint or film clips)

2. Posters showing the experiences. (Contact Adela Gott gott@uiwtx.edu for your price and the sizes of posters. She can print them.)

3. Articles of 4 to 7 pages which can be published on a UIW Service Learning blog or the Ettling Center website.

Keep in mind that pictures can enhance presentations.

If you wish to submit a proposal, the following link will take you into the CardinalSync area. Then the Service Learning Showcase proposal form will open.

Click here to submit your 200 to 400 word proposal though this form.

Thank you for considering the Service Learning Showcase on the afternoon of Friday, March 31, 2017. Faculty, students, and all are invited to attend. Details on time and format will be sent as soon as we can determine how much interest there is.

If you have questions, contact Sister Martha Ann Kirk, Th.D., Ettling Center for Civic Leadership Faculty Liaison. kirk@uiwtx.edu 210-883-5934.

Below is additional information that you may find helpful as you consider submitting your proposal:

Service learning is part of the UIW effort for students to learn civic responsibility and to make volunteer service a life-long commitment.

While all students need to do “community service” before graduating, service learning is more than that. It is

a) required in a class or a program

b) done to better understand course content,

c) done out of concern for the well-being of the community, and

d) students are learning how to reflect, find meaning in their lives,  and keep engaged for the future.

While quotes from students are very welcome, this is a conference of faculty presentations developing scholarship of engagement, not a conference of student presentations on what they learned. (For more information, see http://www.uiw.edu/eccl/Faculty-Resources/resources-for-assistance-and-scholarship.html

Please consult the Faculty Resources page of the Ettling Center for Civic Leadership http://www.uiw.edu/eccl/Faculty-Resources/ for Service and Service Learning Guidelines, Reflection Guide for Developing Service Learning, International Service Learning, Resources for Assistance and Scholarship, and other helpful things.

Each time you do a service learning project in your class be sure and record it by clicking the Recording Service Learning Form https://orgsync.com/49690/forms/199176

When writing your Faculty Self Inventory, please remember that service learning is valued and should be documented on Sedona. The directions for that are posted on BlackBoard in the Faculty Repository site with the title “Intro Service Learning Code in Sedona.”
