The mission and philosophy of the Ila Faye Miller of Nursing and Health Professions flows from the mission of the University of the Incarnate Word published in the University Catalog, and the core values of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word.  The first Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, three young French women motivated by the love of God and their recognition of God's  in each person, came to San Antonio to minister to the sick and  the poor were motivated by the love of God and their recognition of God’s  presence in each person. Their spirit of Christian service is perpetuated in the University of the Incarnate Word primarily through teaching and scholarship, encompassing research and artistic expression. Inspired by Judeo Christian values, the University aims to educate men and women who will become concerned and enlightened citizens.  These values are expressed in faith, service, innovation, truth, and education.
The University of the Incarnate Word envisions DNP educated Family Nurse Practitioners to be persons who will:

  • Integrate nursing science with ethical, biophysical, psychosocial, analytical and  organizational sciences to plan, implement and evaluate advanced practice in nursing at the doctoral level. (I)
  • Design, implement and evaluate evidence based therapeutic interventions and interrelationships using advanced levels of clinical judgment and systems thinking.  (VIII)
  • Synthesize concepts from epidemiological, biostatistical, environmental and medical sciences related to clinical prevention and population health in order to develop, implement and evaluate interventions that improve access to health promotion and disease prevention efforts for culturally diverse and vulnerable populations. (VII)
  • Lead quality improvement and patient safety initiatives to develop and implement practice guidelines to improve the quality of care.  (II)
  • Design and implement processes to evaluate outcomes of practice against national benchmarks to determine disparities in practice outcomes.   (III)
  • Use information technology and research methods to promote safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable and patient centered care.  (IV)
  • Develop, evaluate and provide leadership for health care policies related to health care financing, practice regulation, access, safety, quality, efficacy, equity and social justice.  (V)
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams using effective communication, collaboration, and consultation skills in developing and implementing practice models, guidelines and standards of care, peer review, health policy and scholarly products. (VI)
  • Demonstrate a commitment to lifelong learning of self and peers that incorporates professional nursing standards and accountability.
