Computer Information Systems

Why Computer Information Systems?

What can a degree or minor in CIS do for me?

Computer information systems are pervasive in many homes and in nearly all commercialhelping in class enterprises, educational institutions, government agencies and non-profit organizations. Persons who have a firm understanding of organization functions (such as accounting, economics, marketing, operations and human resources), who have a good working knowledge and experience using problem solving methodologies, and who have the practical knowledge of how to employ computer technology to help an organization effectively and efficiently fulfill its mission, analyze situations and make decisions, and communicate with suppliers, cohorts and clients, are in high demand. The Computer Information Systems program at the University of the Incarnate Word prepares students to obtain this important blend of theory and practical knowledge.

The Computer Information Systems program at UIW was carefully designed to meet the guidelines set forth by professional societies in this discipline and inputs from organizations who employ graduates in this field.  As a consequence, students receive an educational experience that grounds them in concepts they can extrapolate to the constantly changing computing environment, as well as practical, hands-on experience they employ immediately in internships or when they graduate.  The technical environment as the University of the Incarnate Word, including laptops for all students and faculty, the campus-wide wireless network, and the use of Blackboard and other technical aids to learning employed widely across all disciplines gives UIW students an advantage when they join the workforce.

Whether you are pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Information Systems, adding value to another degree through a Computer Information Systems minor, or taking CIS courses as an elective, you can not go wrong nowadays learning about this important facet of all our lives.
