    Call for Papers:
Fifth Annual Water and Culture Symposium

    Friday May 5, 2017

Location: Mabee Library Auditorium, University of the Incarnate Word

    Time: 9:00-5:00 pm

    Theme: Sustainability

Life is dependent on water; consequently, culture, or "ways of living" propagate or die in the delicate balance between sustainable water management and human need. While technological advances of the modern era have expanded water accessibility, they have also introduced new ways of damaging ecosystems and contaminating water resources that are in increasingly short supply as the human population grows worldwide. The Water and Culture Institute at the University of the Incarnate Word is dedicated to the study of the relationship between water resources and culture and the mission of instructing our students on the importance of water conservation and responsible water management in our own community and around the world.

In support of that mission, the English Department invites presentations from all Faculty and graduate students from the surrounding South Central region, and University of the Incarnate Word students on suitable topics related to the interdependent relationships between water and culture. This is a multidisciplinary symposium that welcomes 15-20 minute research presentations, creative writing, panel proposals, and poster presentations on topics that address any and all issues related to water and culture at the state, national, and international level. As a multi-disciplinary symposium, we welcome proposals from all disciplines and critical approaches, including eco-criticism, technical and professional writing, the sciences, business, the social sciences, and the liberal arts. Proposals for creative fiction and nonfiction presentations/performances are also welcomed and encouraged.

In order to present at the symposium, please click here to download the PDF submission form and email it to Dr. Jim Baker at by April 21, 2017.

For UIW Faculty: Please invite students who have completed very good or excellent work on the topic of water and culture in your classes to present at this symposium. If you have a group project, encourage students to submit a panel proposal.
