Brazil Studies

Brazil StudiesNow, students of the UIW can join the university’s globalization efforts and spend 5 Summer weeks in two Brazilian cities learning and experiencing that country’s culture and getting to know its friendly people.

Prerequisites: World Civilizations To and Since 1650.

Requirements: Before departing for Brazil, students must take 6 credit hours of Brazilian Portuguese language, 3 credit hours on the history of Portuguese America and 3 credit hours on the economy of Latin America/Brazil. Students earn 3 credit hours during the 5-week summer internship and another 3 credit hours the following Fall semester by taking History of Latin America Since Independence by presenting paper reports, dissemination of research findings, etc), thus qualifying to receive a certificate in Latin American Studies with concentration on Brazil. Selection criteria are based on financial need.

Brazil StudiesThe internship award covers: round trip airfare, ground transportation, lodging with Brazilian families, program fees at the universities and emergency health insurance.

The students are financially responsible for: passport and visa fees, incidental expenses (museum entry tickets, tips, etc) and per diem for food

Academic qualifications: The student must be at least a junior, and still be enrolled at UIW the Fall semester following the summer internship in Brazil. The student must demonstrate a commitment to acquire speaking knowledge of a new language, and to learn about the culture and ways of life of the country. Upon successful completion of the internship in Brazil, the student may be given special consideration for fellowships and employment opportunities related to Latin America and especially Brazil.
