Brainpower Connection/University Collaborative Programs
The Brainpower Connection is a widening circle of support, influence, and collegiality established when five different institutions - their faculties and students - connect to share their brainpower. Shared vision, shared faculties, and shared facilities help break down the walls that traditionally separate elementary schools, high schools, and universities.
The schools in the Brainpower Connection are the University of the Incarnate Word; St. Anthony Elementary School, and its developmental pre-school, the Katherine Ryan Program; St. Peter Prince of Apostles Elementary School; Incarnate Word High School, for young women; and St. Anthony Catholic High School, for young men and women. The two high schools of the Brainpower Connection are actually under the management of the University of the Incarnate Word. All employees - faculty, staff, and administration - are employees of the University. The Dean of University Collaborative Programs is the Chief Administrative Officer of both high schools and holds bottom line responsibility for each. Campus principals are on site at both high schools. The elementary schools have their own school boards.
The Brainpower Connection is coordinated by a council made up of representatives of each institution and is designed to preserve the discrete nature of each school. Incarnate Word High School, for young women and St. Anthony Catholic High School, for young men both have boarding programs for students. These programs let the boarding students experience the cultural diversity of San Antonio while enjoying a comprehensive, Catholic based education.
Incarnate Word High School
Incarnate
Word High School is a private Catholic college-preparatory school
for young women. The school was specifically founded to assist parents
in the spiritual formation and education of their daughters. The intent
of the school program is to nourish all dimensions of the student in order
to prepare her for responsible and productive Christian living.
Philosophy
Dedicated to academic excellence, Incarnate Word High School challenges students with a spiritually and intellectually demanding curriculum. The faculty constantly seeks to update the curriculum in order to maintain the high standards expected of a college-preparatory school. This helps the students to learn how to critically assess the choices before them, and how to cope with new and challenging circumstances.
Incarnate Word High School promotes a profound respect for persons of all creeds, cultures, and races. A young woman leaves Incarnate Word High School with an inquiring mind, a confident assessment of her own self-worth, and the empowerment to make a difference.
St. Anthony Catholic High School
St.
Anthony Catholic High School was opened in 1903 by the Missionary
Oblates of Mary Immaculate. Now part of the Brainpower Connection operated
by University of the Incarnate Word, the school emphasizes empowering
young men and women with the opportunity to develop their potential for
Christian leadership through the curriculum. Additionally, students are
provided with excellent academic preparation. Ninety-nine percent of graduates
enter college upon high school graduation.
The school offers resident and day student programs at its 3200 McCullough Ave. location. The 22-acre facility currently enrolls about 200 students.
Students also compete in varsity interscholastic sports; including football, cross-country, basketball, soccer, baseball, track, and tennis. St. Anthony Catholic High School is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Texas Catholic Conference Education Department.
