INDIVIDUAL CARDINALS BREAK THEIR OWN MARKS -- posted Friday, April 25 2008
Incarnate Word’s men’s track team continues to post new school marks and it’s to the point that the Cardinals are lowering their personal standards.
The Cardinals were in Houston for the annual J. Fred Duckett Twilight Meet hosted by Rice University and three of them re-recorded their names in the UIW book.
Senior Chacho Madera got it underway when he ran a 48.74 in the 400 meters. That was another Incarnate Word record, breaking his own from earlier in the spring.
Next up was sophomore Jay Wilson. He ran a 1:55.04 for 800 meters. That was a new UIW record, breaking of course his own mark.
Junior Mark Olivares threw the discus 46.94 meters and that was the third and final new mark for Incarnate Word. As with Madera and Wilson, Olivares upped his previous personal record.

Senior Chacho Madera once again lowered his own mark in the 400 meters.
With the spring season winding down Incarnate Word’s record book is beginning to take its final shape yet the Cardinals managed to lower three marks over the weekend in Austin.
Senior Chacho Madera ran the 400 meters at the University of Texas Twilight meet and established a new UIW mark of 48.86. That time was good for ninth place in the event. Three teammates were not all that far behind Madera as freshman Taylor Echevarria (50.20) finished 14th, junior Lalo Flores (50.54) was 17th and freshman John Zavala (50.76) was 18th.
Madera and Echevarria then joined up with the freshmen twins, Christian and George Alicea, to post another Incarnate Word school best. Those four toured the 4x400 relay course in 3:16.94 which earned them a third place finish.
Sophomore Jay Wilson lowered his own mark in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:01.60. Just one month ago he had set the UIW mark running on the same track as he did Saturday.
WILSON BREAKS HIS OWN UIW MARK -- posted Thursday, April 3 2008

Sophomore Jay Wilson lowered his own UIW mark in Austin.
Sophomore Jay Wilson has an affinity for one particular track in Austin as he has lowered his own Incarnate Word school record on that same surface.
Running in the annual Texas Relays, Wilson toured the course in 1:55.33 to break the UIW record for the 800 meters.
The previous mark was 1:57.37 set two weeks earlier by Wilson at the University of Texas Invitational in Austin, on his now favorite track.
In the Texas Relays, which requires qualifying standards because of the sheer numbers of prospective participants, UIW’s second runner on Day One was freshman Adrian Carrillo who put up a time of 16:06.10 in the 5,000 meters.

UIW's Chacho Madera ran the 200 meters at Rice and then anchored the Cardinals' record-setting 4x400 relay team.
A pair of Incarnate Word relay teams topped all Cardinals efforts Saturday at the annual Rice University Victor Lopez Invitational conducted in Houston.

Just two events prior to that, the two Alicea brothers and Echevarria joined freshman Travis Barton to run a 43.14 in the 4x100 relay to finish eighth. That time was the third best in school history.
There were two other top 10 finishes for the Cardinals in the event which featured top unattached athletes as well as noted runners, jumpers and throwers from Division I schools.

UIW SENDS RECORD NUMBER TO AUSTIN -- posted Friday, March 28 2008
The Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays is one of the bigger, more prominent track and field events on anyone’s spring schedule and this next week Incarnate Word will have its greatest number of athletes competing than ever before.
The Relays became so popular nationally that qualification standards were established both to limit the number of entries and to be sure the elite athletes were present.
Based on their performances to date nine Cardinals will be in Austin from April 2 to April 5 competing against the best in the college division of the Relays.
UIW gets its first action when senior Yvonne Rodriguez and freshman Adrian Carrillo compete in the 5,000 meters on Wednesday (April 2) night. That same evening, sophomore Jay Wilson will run the 800 meters seeking to better his own UIW record of 1:57.37.
The Cardinals then jump over to Friday (April 4) for their next action. The 100 meters is the UIW event and junior Lalo Flores will represent the Incarnate Word men while sophomore Hayley Watts will carry the women’s banner.
The final action for UIW comes on Saturday (April 5) afternoon, the prime time slot for the Relays. And, it will be a new event for the Cardinals, the 4x200 relay. Incarnate Word is yet to compete at this distance and while the lineup has not been determined, the Cardinals have a roster of available runners who this spring already have established new school marks in both the 4x100 and the 4x400 events.
