WOMEN CARDINALS ADVANCE WITH THURSDAY WIN -- posted Thursday, May 8 2008

Sarah Carswell got the deciding point Thursday as UIW moves on in the regional tournament.

Incarnate Word’s women’s tennis Cardinals, ranked 17 in the nation, moved on in the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Tournament with a 5-1 decision over Central Oklahoma in Thursday’s first round.

The Cardinals, seeded second in the region, now play number three ranked Tarleton State for the right to play in the Division II Sweet Sixteen May 14-17 in Houston. Friday’s match will begin at 2 p.m. at UIW’s Mabry Center.

While the score was significantly one-sided the match was closer than meets the eye. Incarnate Word got off to a rapid start with all three doubles points setting itself up for just two more points and the win.

In three of the six singles UIW lost the first set. Ultimately over at number three, Nadia Pope had to retire with leg cramps giving the point to UCO’s Dasha Titkina. And that would be it for the Bronchos.

With the Cardinals having either split sets or trailing in other encounters, it came down to Big Match Sarah Carswell and Big Match Gretchen Trautmann. On five other occasions this spring these two have won singles matches putting the Cardinals over the top for team victories.

Trautmann worked too fast Thursday as she defeated Amy Cabato 6-4, 6-0 at number four. That left the winner’s door open for Carswell who just minutes later polished off a 6-2, 6-2 win at number five and the match belonged to the Cardinals.

UIW is now 17-4 on the year while Central Oklahoma falls to 11-9. This was Incarnate Word’s second win over UCO this year as the Cardinals won 5-1 back on March 28 in Abilene.

CARDINALS RETURN TO HEARTLAND TITLE ROOM -- posted Saturday, April 26 2008

Sophomore Erica Engberg won her singles match at number six giving UIW the needed fifth point and the 2008 Heartland Conference championship.

INCARNATE WORD 5, ST. EDWARD'S 3

It was a bit of a struggle Saturday morning in Austin but in the end Incarnate Word's women's tennis team won its fifth crown in the eight years of the league with a 5-3 team victory over St. Edward's, reversing a loss to the Hilltoppers in the 2007 tournament finals.

The fifth win in a row for the Cardinals gives them a 16-4 season mark and puts UIW smack in the middle of the Central Regional picture. In fact, Incarnate Word has a chance to be seeded second in the region meaning the Cardinals could possibly hosts a first round match.

Plus, the Cardinals are within one team victory of equaling the school record of 17 in a single season. That occurred in 2004 when UIW came within a single point of winning the region and moving on to the NCAA Division II National Championships.

In the title match played at the South Austin Tennis Center, the Cardinals got wins at second and third doubles but saw the Hilltoppers surge back in the lead with wins at one and three singles.

That is when the bottom of the Cardinals' order came forward with three wins and the crown returned to Incarnate Word. Both Gretchen Trautmann at four and Sarah Carswell at five were victorious by identical 6-1, 6-1 scores before Erica Engberg iced the deal at six with a 6-4, 6-1 win.

Now the Cardinals will await their regional bid and to see if indeed the matches come to the Mabry Center on May 8.

CARDINALS GET BIG REGIONAL WIN -- posted Friday, April 18 2008

Junior Chandra Capozzi nailed down the UIW win with a victory at number one singles.

The scramble is on for positions in the NCAA Division II Central Regional tennis tournament during early May and Incarnate Word’s women’s team took a big step on Friday afternoon at the Mabry Center.

The Cardinals hosted and defeated Tarleton State 6-3. What was important was the fact this was an in-region match. What was big was the fact that Tarleton State (11-5) was ranked ahead of UIW in the standings, third to fourth. With the victory, UIW (14-4) figures to move up into a more favorable position come seedings time.

The Cardinals jumped out 2-1 in the doubles despite losing at number one where juniors Chandra Capozzi and Sarah Carswell dropped the affair 8-3 while never looking comfortable in the effort.

Both both redeemed themselves in singles, with flying colors.

Nursing that 2-1 margin, Carswell at number five singles won in a romp, 6-0, 6-2 to give UIW its third point. Number four point came from freshman Gretchen Trautmann with her 6-1, 6-4 win at number four.

All the while Capozzi at number one was steadily moving ahead and soon after Trautmann’s win posted the winning fifth point with a 6-1, 6-3 win.

Next up for the Cardinals is the annual Heartland Conference championship tournament set for Austin on April 25 and 26. Incarnate Word was runnerup a year ago in the league’s title competition.

UIW TIGHTENS GRIP ON REGIONAL POSITION -- posted Friday, April 11 2008

Junior Sarah Carswell won at number five singles to clinch the match against Cameron.

INCARNATE WORD WOMEN 6, CAMERON 1

What Incarnate Word did Friday afternoon was tighten up its hold on a regional ranking with a decisive 6-1 win over Cameron of Oklahoma in a tennis match played at UIW’s Mabry Center.

The Cardinals are currently ranked fourth in the NCAA Division II Central Region while Cameron is sixth. The win pushed UIW to 12-4 on the year as teams are jockeying for positions in the upcoming regional tournaments.

The clincher came at number five singles where junior Sarah Carswell made short work of her opponent with a 6-0, 6-1 victory. That was point five which is needed in a nine-point match.

Incarnate Word got out of the blocks quickly by winning the top two doubles matches for a 2-1 lead heading into the singles. Prior to Carswell finishing, Gretchen Trautmann won at number four and Alba Passanisi won at two.

Next up for the Cardinals is a trip across town to play at St. Mary’s at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Erica Engberg (pictured) and partner Gretchen Trautmann won their number two doubles match for UIW's only point Friday.

BARRY (Fla) 8, INCARNATE WORD 1

Incarnate Word had a promising beginning to Friday’s match with the nation’s 10th-ranked team but when the results were posted it was not such a good ending.

Barry came to town with the national ranking and a glittering record—now 16-4—and won two of the three doubles to open the day. Incarnate Word’s Sarah Trautmann and Erica Engberg won at number two doubles preventing the Buccaneers from jumping out to a 3-0 lead in a match which needed five points to be won.

Barry won handily at number one doubles but struggled to a 9-7 win at number three where UIW’s Alba Passanisi and Nadia Pope took it to the wire before losing.

Then, Barry began its roll by winning the top three singles to guarantee itself another victory.

Incarnate Word, ranked 28th in the nation, goes to 11-4 on the year.

CARDINALS GET TO LAST MATCH TIEBREAKER BEFORE FALLING -- posted Monday, March 17 2008

SEATTLE PACIFIC WOMEN 5, INCARNATE WORD 4

Let us count the ways this women's tennis match was in doubt all afternoon and ultimately came down to a final point before nationally-ranked Hawaii Pacific prevailed over Incarnate Word's women by a 5-4 count Monday afternoon at the Mabry Center.

Twenty-second ranked HPU had taken a narrow 4-3 lead and needed but one more point when the numbers five and six singles matches became extra heated. And both went three sets and one, the deciding match, went into a third set tiebreaker.

The Cardinals won at number one doubles and at number three doubles for a 2-1 lead prior to the singles.

Then when Chandra Capozzi won at number one singles for UIW, the Cardinals had a 3-1 margin. The Sea Warriors recovered however with wins at two through four singles to go on top 4-3. That's when the other late-starting singles warmed up.

As UIW's Sarah Carswell and Erica Engberg both fought their way into third sets, Engberg at number six found herself in a hole. With the deciding set at 5-3 for HPU's Lauren Shin, Engberg fought off three match points--her match and the team match--to break serve and get it to 5-4 with her serve coming up. She held and ultimately prevailed 6-0, 3-6, 7-5.

Meanwhile, one court over, Carswell and Pacific's Ralitsa Pirdopska were going at it with both racquets and words as practically half the spectators got involved in disputed lines calls.

Down 4-1 in the final set, Carswell fought back and held serve to level it at 4-4. Pirdopska held to go up 5-4 before there were three consecutive service breaks and the match, at 6-6, was headed for the tiebreaker. There Pirdopska jumped out early and went on to a 7-3 margin in the breaker and a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 victory to give the Sea Warriors their 10th win against three losses.

INCARNATE WORD WOMEN 8, ST. MARY’S 1

It was only at number six singles Friday afternoon where Incarnate Word falterd and that came with a retirement as the Cardinals were on their way to an 8-1 Heartland Conference tennis victory over St. Mary’s.

In the match played at UIW’s Mabry Center, Ashley Hernandez had dropped the first set 6-1 but was rallying in the second, up 4-2, when she became ill and had to retire. That gave St. Mary’s its only win of the afternoon.

Otherwise, the Cardinals upped their season mark to 10-1 with relative ease.

UIW won all three doubles with the loss of but two games, then plowed through the first four singles matches before hitting a speed bump at number five. There, Jennifer Solis of UIW lost the first set 7-6 but came back 6-3 in the second to force a tiebreaker which she won 10-5.

The Cardinals now get ready for traditional power Hawaii Pacific. This match is set for Monday at 2 p.m. at the Mabry Center on the UIW campus.

CLEAN SWEEP FOR CARSWELL, WOMEN’S TENNIS TEAM -- posted Monday, March 10 2008

Incarnate Word’s women’s tennis Cardinals went to Austin and then up Hildebrand Avenue recently for a pair of matches against worthy opponents and came home with two victories.

At St. Edward’s in Austin, against the team ranked number 27 in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), Incarnate Word put a narrow 5-4 loss on the Hilltoppers.

After winning at the top two doubles positions, the Cardinals watched St. Edward’s win at three doubles and the top three singles matches to go up 4-2.

Then the Cardinals power kicked in and UIW won the final three singles for the one-point margin.

The key match came at number five singles where Sarah Carswell won 7-5, 7-5. This was after being unable to practice because of illness and having Coach John Newman, for strategic purposes, telling her to take the court and “just stand there as long as she felt she could” before possibly retiring. Well, the junior from San Antonio Churchill “stood” there long enough to win.

Next up for UIW was Trinity, a Division III powerhouse.

Carswell again was not totally healthy and the same strategy was employed in singles. Once more, she stood around just long enough to win at number five singles, 6-0, 6-1, and that turned out to be the deciding match in the 6-3 UIW victory over the Tigers.

Trinity had won two of three doubles before Incarnate Word won at one and two singles and five (Carswell) and six singles to win the day.

The Cardinals are now 8-1 on the year.

In one of her final tennis tournaments, she enjoyed perhaps her greatest success when at the prestigious Broncho Invitational in Oklahoma she was undefeated in both singles and doubles as the Cardinals went 5-0 in team match play.
