SYNCHRO CARDINALS FINISH FIFTH -- posted Tuesday, May 6 2008

Junior Lyssa Wallace finished seventh in solo at the US National Championships in Arizona.
In the heat of the desert Incarnate Word’s synchronized swimming Cardinals competed in the 2008 US National Championships and posted a fifth place finish in the competition among elite teams both collegiate and club.
The Cardinals scored points in the solo event as well as the team portion. Junior Lyssa Wallace accumulated 93.083 points in solo for a seventh place position.
Then, the combination of seniors Natalie Chase, Liz Chinoransky and Emily Van Vleck, Wallace, sophomores Vanessa Calle, Lindsay Cartledge, and Erin Dunne along with freshmen Ashley Cohen and Alex Stensby teamed for a fourth place finish in the team event with 90.583 points.
There was a tie for the overall title between the nationally known Santa Clara Aquamaids and current collegiate champion Stanford University. The 2008 collegiate runnerup Ohio State was third.
The competition was conducted at Tucson, Ariz.

UIW's synchronized swim team finished fourth in the nation.
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Cardinal synchronized swim team capped off its 2008 season with a fourth place finish at the U.S. Collegiate Championships, hosted by Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio, Saturday.
After the three-day meet, Incarnate Word garnered 65.0 points, just five points shy of third place finisher, Canisius College. Stanford won its fourth straight national championship with a total of 94.0 points and the host Buckeyes came in second with 87.0 points.
Lyssa Wallace finished in fifth place in the solo competition with 92 points. Wallace, together with Emily Van Vleck, also finished fifth in the duet competition with a score of 92.333. Duo Liz Chinoransky and Natalie Chase scored 89.33 points for a seventh place showing.
UIW had two trios competing and finished in fifth and sixth place. The fifth place team, made up of Van Vleck, Vanessa Calle, and Alex Stensby recorded a score of 91.500. Chinoransky, Chase and Erin Dunne finished in sixth place with 89.833 points.
As a team, the Cardinals finished fourth. Wallace, Van Vleck, Calle, Stensby, Chinoransky, Chase, Dunne and Ashley Cohen recorded a mark of 94.167.
Four Cardinals were chosen as Collegiate All-Americans: Wallace, Van Vleck, Chinoransky and Chase. There were also three All-Collegiate awards given by division and Chase, Van Vleck, and Wallace swept the Division II awards.

Cardinals Fare Well in Figures Competition -- posted Friday, March 28 2008
The Incarnate Word synchronized swim team competed in the figures competition at the 2008 U.S. Collegiate Championships, with Alex Stensby taking a third place showing in the B Figures. The national meet is being hosted by Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.
In the B Figures compeition, two Cardinals finished in the top 10 and two more finished in the top 15. Stensby finished third with a score of 70.024. Liza Walker-Byron took a ninth place finish with a score of 68.573.
Erin Dunne and Ashley Cohen finished 12th and 13th place, respectively. Dunne had a score of 67.492 and Cohen recorded a mark of 67.259.
Elizabeth Norton finished at the 23rd mark, which Nikki Neufeld finished in 35th.
In A Figures, UIW’s Lyssa Wallce finished in 10th place with a score of 81.667. In 17th place was Emily Van Vleck with a mark of 79.588. Natalie Chase had a 19th place showing with a 78.654. Liz Chinoransky came in 22nd with a 78.182 and Vanessa Calle came in 24th with a 77.019.
The Cardinals will compete in the team, solo, duet, and trio finals in the last day of the collegiate national meet Saturday.
In 2007, the UIW synchro team finished third at the national meet.

The 2008 Cardinals swept the regional competition for the first time in school history.
Not only did the Incarnate Word synchronized swim team take the victory at the South Collegiate Regional Championships, the Cardinals - for the first time in school history - swept all events. The meet took place last weekend at George Mason University in Fairfield, Va., and serves as preparation for the Collegiate Nationals March 26-29 in Columbus, Ohio.
As a team, the Cardinals posted 103 points for the win, 18 points above second place finisher, Alabama-Birmingham. UIW had two separate groups in team competition. The first place group consisted of Vanessa Calle, Alex Stensby, Emily Van Vleck, Lyssa Wallace, Natalie Chase, Liz Chinoransky, and Ashley Cohen and tallied a 93.400 for the win. The Cardinals’ second team of Lindsay Cartledge, Nikki Neufeld, Elizabeth Norton and Liza Walker-Byron place third with a score of 85.500.
In the duet competition, Van Vleck and Wallace took the title with a 90.90 score. UIW’s other duo, Chase and Chinoransky, came in second with a score of 89.30. Wallace also scored a 90.90 in the solo routine.
Then in the trio competition, UIW once again took the top two places. Calle, Stensby, and Van Vleck recorded an 89.30 for the win while Chase, Chinoransky, and Erin Dunne finished in second with 88.60 points.
In figures, Wallace and Van Vleck took first and second place, respectively, scoring a 76.891 and a 76.375. Chinoransky, Chase and Calle came in sixth, seventh, and eighth.
“I am very proud of all my athletes,” said head coach Kim LoPorto. “They truly stepped up and conquered, giving us the motivation to push harder for the next month to prepare for Collegiate Nationals in Ohio.”

UIW defeated Canisius, 98-91, Saturday
The synchronized swim team won its first home meet of the year Saturday with a 98-91 win over Canisius College in the Barshop Natatorium.
UIW’s trios took the two top spots in their event. Natalie Chase, Liz Chinoransky, and Erin Dunne recorded a first place finish with 89 points as Vanessa Calle, Alex Stensby and Emily Van Vleck came in second with a total of 85.333.
Van Vleck and Lyssa Wallace posted a second place showing with 86 points in the duet competition. Wallace also finished in second place in the solo event, posting a score of 91.333. Canisius’ Yulie Shepeleva posted a 92 point win in the same event.
As a team, UIW tallied 94.167 points for the win.
The Cardinals will close out their home slate this weekend with a meet against Stanford and Minnesota. The meet is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. in UIW’s Barshop Natatorium.

Emily Van Vleck won the solo competition
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - In their third competition of the season, the Incarnate Word synchronized swim team swept the competition that included teams from the University of Florida and Michigan last weekend in Gainesville, Fla.
As a team, UIW posted a score of 91.667, almost 10 points better than the second place finisher, who tallied a total score of 82.83.
In the solo competition, Lyssa Wallace recorded a mark of 89.5 as second place finisher Emily Terwelp of Michigan scored an 81.667.
Two Cardinal trios took the top two spots in their division as Vanessa Calle, Alex Stensby and Emily Van Vleck recorded an 87.33 for the win. Natalie Chase, Liz Chinoransky and Erin Dunne posted an 86.33 for second place.
Van Vleck and Wallace were the top duet as they recorded an 88.8. Chase and Chinoransky tallied an 86.5 to record a second place showing.
In the solos, UIW took the top five places out of seven competitors. Van Vleck won the event, scoring an 82.95. Wallace’s score of 82.80 put her second place while Calle finished in third with a score of 81.896. Chase and Chinoransky wrapped up the top five with Chase tallying a score of 79.69 and Chinoransky just behind with a 78.53.
The Cardinals host Canisius College this Saturday at Barshop Natatorium with competition beginning at 8:30 a.m.

The Incarnate Word synchronized swimming team opened its 2008 schedule over the weekend at the William & Mary Invitational. The Cardinals finished in second place with 84 points behind Stanford, who collected 101 points. Richmond (61.5), William & Mary (55), Mary Washington (29) and Penn State (28) followed in the team standings.
In the solo event, UIW’s Lyssa Wallace finished in second place with 90.333 points. Wallace, together with Emily Van Vleck, finished fourth in the duet routine, collecting 90.667 points. In the same event, UIW’s Natalie Chase and Liz Chinoransky finished in fifth place with 89.333 points.
As a trio, Van Vleck, Vanessa Calle, and Alex Stensby recorded 88.833 points and finished in third place. Chase, Chinoransky and Erin Dunne came in fourth place with 88.167 points.
The synchro team had competed at the beginning of the semester against Wheaton College in Puerto Rico. In solo competition, Wallace and Van Vleck tied for first with 90.0 total points. As a duet, Chinoransky and Chase scored 87 points for first place.
Calle, Stensby, and Van Vleck took the win as a trio, scoring 88 points, while Chinoransky, Dunne and Chase scored 85 for second place.
As a team, Calle, Chase, Chinoransky, Dunne, Stensby, Van Vleck, Wallace and Ashley Cohen tallied 89 points for the team win. UIW’s second team, made up of Lindsay Cartledge, Nikki Newfeld, Liz Norton, Liza Walker-Byron brought home a second place finish with 82 points.
The Cardinals will next compete Saturday in Gainesville, Fla., in a dual meet against the Gators.

UIW Synchro Hosts Annual Water Show Saturday -- posted Thursday, October 25 2007

The synchronized swim team will make their 2007 debut Saturday.
The Incarnate Word synchronized swim team, together with San Antonio’s local club team, the Cygnets, will host the annual water show Saturday at the Barshop Natatorium.
The matinee will begin at 2 p.m. with an encore performance at 8 p.m. Tickets, which will be available at the door, are $7 for the general public and $4 for children, as well as UIW faculty, staff, and students.
The theme for this year’s show is “It’s a Small World.” Members from both the Cardinals and the Cygnets will perform to music from around the world.
Along with each show, there will be a silent auction with over 25 items up for grabs. All proceeds will benefit the Cardinals synchro team.
This will be the only performance for the Cardinals this fall as they wait for their competitive season to begin January 26 at Virginia.
