YATSKO SELECTED MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR -- posted Monday, April 28 2008

Freshman Aliaksandr Yatsko is the 2007-2008 UIW Male Athlete of the Year.

Aliaksandr Yatsko won the NCAA D-II national title in the 500 meters and became an All-American.

He began his journey by flying high and fast over the water to get to Incarnate Word and then he swam through the water often and quick enough to be named Incarnate Word’s Male Athlete of the Year for 2007-1008.

On his way to earning the University’s top yearend honor for male athletes, Aliaksandr Yatsko became UIW’s first national champion of any kind in some 14 years when he won the 500-meter freestyle race at the NCAA Division II National Championships.

In winning that particular race, he was named All-American. And, he three other All-American designations after finishing third in both the 200 free and 1,650 free, and then fourth in the 1,000 freestyle event. All that made him a four-time national honoree, in one year.

A native of Minsk, Belarus, Yatsko’s journey to San Antonio began when another swimmer from his home country referred Yatsko to UIW Coach Phillip Davis. A series of e-mails and telephone calls ensued as he was being courted by some significant Division I schools in the United States.

His decision was made and he boarded the airplane to fly over the big water, landing in UIW’s Barshop Natatorium where during the year he set a grand total of six individual school records and was a member of relay teams establishing an additional four school marks.

His records and awards came principally in freestyle events but he did divert himself enough to win and set a record in the 400-meter individual medley at the New South Intercollegiate Swimming Conference meet.

Seven times during the year the sophomore information technology major was voted Incarnate Word’s male athlete of the week.

All during the athletic-academic year coaches and staff persons in the Cardinals athletic department select a female athlete of the week. At the end of the year all who have received a weekly honor are eligible for the final balloting to select the athlete of the year. The selections are based solely on performances on the court, field, course or in the water.

Yatsko, Alexander Set Pool Records in Season Opener -- posted Sunday, October 7 2007

Men's and women's swimming open season

Cardinal swimmers, Alex Yatsko and Paulina Alexander, opened the 2007-2008 season by setting pool records at Centenary College in Shreveport, La., in both teams’ first dual-meet of the year. Yatsko, a member of the inaugural men’s team, set new pool records in both the 500 freestyle and the 1000 freestyle as Alexander set a record in the women’s 200-individual medley.

Overall, Centenary outscored Incarnate Word, 271 to 137, but in their first competition of action, the men’s 400 medley relay recorded a first place finish, Yatsko and Nathan Edwards each won two events. On the women’s side, Natalie Breault took a win in addition to Alexander. Breaking down the score, the Gents outscored UIW’s men’s team, 129 to 75 as the Ladies had a 142-62 advantage over the women’s team.

In the 400-medley relay, Edwards, Mark McCombs, Sean Reeves, and Ryan Rivette, recorded a 3:36.76 finish for the victory. Edwards also recorded wins in the 200-butterfly and the 200-backstroke. In the butterfly, he finished in 1:58.45 and collected a 1:57.96 finish in the backstroke.

Yatsko’s 1000-freestyle finish came in 9:39.68, breaking the pool record of 9:40.76. He also set the record in the 500-freestyle. His time of 4:41.43 set the pool record by a narrow margin, as the previous record was 4:41.83.

Alexander broke the pool record by a little more than two seconds, as she finished the 200-individual medley in 2:10.67. The record was 2:12.83.

Breault won the 100-freestyle with a time of 55.81.

MEN’S SWIMMING COMES TO UIW -- posted Thursday, May 17 2007

Riding the wave of growth and expansion present in the athletic department at Incarnate Word, the announcement has come that the Cardinals next fall will be in the business of swimming for men.

“Based on the growth of our women’s program in the last 18 months,” UIW Athletic Director Mark Papich said, “this was the natural direction for us to take. Plus, in the Barshop Natatorium, we have this outstanding facility. That added to the unlimited enthusiasm of Coach Phillip Davis gives us the components to make this addition successful.”

This addition, following closely after the announcement that UIW will field a football team in the fall of 2009, gives Incarnate Word 19 sponsored teams including 10 for women and nine for men.

Recruiting is underway for the men’s team and early returns show the potential roster already into double figures with athletes committing to UIW.

“Coach Davis’ energy in recruiting and his coaching knowledge are exactly what we need for this program to take off,” Papich said. “We have been laying the groundwork for more than a year now to add men’s swimming.”

Another factor cited in the growth into men’s swimming is that when scheduling, most all schools prefer formats for both men and women.

The new Cardinals team will begin competition in the schoolyear 2007-2008. Incarnate Word’s men’s team, as does its women’s team, will compete in the New South Intercollegiate Swimming Conference.

Complete information about the new Incarnate Word men’s swimming team is available by contacting Coach Phillip Davis at (210) 805-3078 or by e-mailing padavis@uiwtx.edu.
