DAVIS NAMED SWIMMING COACH -- posted Tuesday, June 13 2006

Phillip Davis has joined the Incarnate Word athletic staff as the new women’s swimming coach.

His appointment is effective immediately and was announced by UIW Athletic Director Mark Papich.

“Phillip is coming from a successful program to his first job as a head coach at the university level,” Papich said. “He brings a needed quality of exuberance and he fits into the mold of new coaches at Incarnate Word. That is a mold of high energy and a passion for his sport.”

Davis joins the Cardinals after working three years as the assistant swimming coach for both men and women at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkansas. While there, two OBU swimmers participated in the US Olympic trials, and 11 of OBU’s women swimmers achieved All-American status.

For the past five years, he has been an instructor in the Ouachita Baptist health, physical education and recreation department. Additionally, this past spring semester, he was an adjunct teacher in the physical education department at Henderson State University.

A native of Camden, Ark., Davis earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Ouachita Baptist and a master’s degree in sports administration from Henderson State.

The women’s swimming program at Incarnate Word began in the fall of 2001 and for the past five years has competed as a member of the New South Collegiate Swimming Conference.
