TWO ALL-AMERICANS SELECTED TO UIW HALL -- posted Wednesday, March 26 2008

Holly Barrow Smith is a member of the UIW Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2008.

Will Carbonara is the second member of the UIW Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2008.
Both were All-America during their days at Incarnate Word, on the field and in the classroom, and they are now the Class of 2008 as the newest members have been announced for the UIW Athletic Hall of Fame.
Incarnate Word Athletic Director Mark Papich said soccer player Holly Barrow Smith and baseball player Will Carbonara are the latest to be included in the UIW Hall. Formal recognition will come on Friday, May 16, when the athletic department holds its annual Las Vegas Night on campus.
“The selection of Holly and Will as the Class of 2008 is an on-going testament to the quality of student-athletes who have passed through Incarnate Word’s programs,” Papich said. “Having seen them both compete at the upper levels of their sports verifies my feelings that they both truly are worthy of this Hall of Fame honor.”
During her four years at Incarnate Word, Smith, a product of San Antonio’s Madison High School, was All-American three times and once was NAIA All-National Tournament. On the soccer field, twice she was Heart of Texas Conference player of the year and three times she was all-region.
In the classroom, Smith was GTE Academic All-District and was HOT conference all-academic. She received a bachelor’s degree in physical education in the spring of 1997 and in 2000 earned a master’s degree in sports management.
On the baseball field, Carbonara, as a senior in 2002, set a school and Heartland Conference record with his .460 batting average. That season he was the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Player of the Year. And, he was Verizon Academic All-America based both on his performance on the field and his achievements in the classroom.
Upon receiving his bachelor’s degree in business, the Cuero, Texas, product was selected to receive an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship based on his baseball activities and on his overall 3.955 grade point average. After playing a season-plus in the Baltimore Orioles organization, he returned to UIW and with that NCAA grant earned a master’s degree in business.
Criteria for selection to the UIW Athletic Hall of Fame includes an earned degree from Incarnate Word, significant contributions to a team or teams for at least two years and having five years lapse since the completion of eligibility. In addition to former athletes being eligible, former coaches, administrators or contributors of note may be inducted into the Hall.
