INAUGURAL CLASS OF 2005

JONAS ANDERSSON

Jonas AnderssonAt Incarnate Word he played tennis for three years during which time he won three national championships, becoming the first and only UIW athlete to win a national title.  In 1994 he was the Rolex men’s doubles national champion, and in 1995 he won the NAIA National Singles Championship and teamed with Javier Ruiz to win the NAIA National Doubles Championship.  He was an NAIA All-American in both 1995 and 1996.  He received his bachelor’s of business administration degree from UIW in the spring of 1997.

Currently the tennis professional at West End Racquet Club in Torrance, Calif., Jonas has continued to win national championships since leaving Incarnate Word.  He has won two national titles including the 2004 men’s USTA 5.0 team title and the 2004 mixed USTA 10.0 team crown.  Also in 2004, he was a Yonex Men’s Open semi-finalist.

JENNY CARNES

Jenny CarnesDuring her time at Incarnate Word, Jenny played four years of basketball and two years of tennis.  During her senior year of 1998-1999, she received more significant honors and awards than any female athlete in the history of the University.  Among the many, she was the first-ever basketball player to be named NAIA All-America, she was the most valuable player in the Heart of Texas Conference, and, she was GTE Academic All-District.  In 1998 she was NAIA All-American Scholar-Athlete.  She received her bachelor’s degree in business administration (sports management) in 1999.

Since 2000, she has worked for the San Antonio Sports Foundation in a role specific to the city’s hosting of NCAA championship events.  Advancing to a director’s position, she also has responsibilities for such areas as the internship program, awards programs and the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame.  Among her many current civic activities are Toastmasters, YoungExecs, and Young Leaders Forum.

RANDY HENDERSON

Randy HendersonAs a basketball player at Incarnate Word, Randy, as a senior, was NAIA All-America, and was NAIA All-American Scholar-Athlete as well as GTE Academic All-America.  He also was the NAIA District VI Player of the Year in 1993.  He was the leading scorer, field goal percentage shooter and shot-blocker for the 1992-1993 team, the first from UIW to reach the NAIA national tournament.  In 1993, he received his UIW degree in business administration (accounting) as a Magna Cum Laude graduate.  He was the accounting student of the year.

He began his teaching and coaching career in 1995 and since 2003 has been in the Port Aransas, Texas, Independent School District.  Currently, he teaches mathematics there while working as the head girl’s basketball coach. For the 2004-2005 season, his team was 32-5, qualified for the region tournament and he was the district coach of the year.

KERWIN JOHNSON

Kerwin JohnsonTwo times at Incarnate Word Kerwin was named NAIA All-American, in 1995 and 1996.  He continues as the all-time UIW leader in points scored (239) and goals scored (99), marks that some say will never be topped.  He played on the US National B Team, and played in the 1997 Umbro All-Star Game.  After leaving UIW, he played professionally in Germany and then was invited to training camp with two different MLS sides.    He received his bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1998.

Kerwin has held management positions with several corporations including his current position with Cingular Wireless.  In the community, he has concentrated his activities with the DARE program, the Red Cross, the Healy Murphy Fund and at the Battered Women’s Shelter.

HOWARD PATTERSON

Howard PattersonHoward was director of athletics at Incarnate Word for 11 and one-half years, from 1990 to 2001.   He was a charter member and a vice president of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.   The first nine of his UIW  years, he was the men’s soccer coach and in eight of those seasons his teams advanced to the playoffs and twice reached the NAIA National Tournament.  At the end of his coaching career, his 395 wins were the most in the history of the NAIA.  Those 395 included 155 victories at UIW which remain a school record.  He is a member of the NAIA Hall of Fame, he holds a Letter of Commendation from the NSCAA.

Currently, he is Director of Athletics and Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Texas at Tyler.  The holder of a doctor of philosophy degree from the University of North Texas, Howard, at UT/Tyler in 2001 began that school’s athletic programs from ground zero—no facilities, no coaches, no student-athletes.  Now, the school is represented by 13 different teams.  Recently Howard was elected to the Whitehouse, Texas, School Board.

TIM CHESTNEY

Tim ChestneyIn the fall of 1996, Tim Chestney had a double-double as a member of the Incarnate Word soccer team.  He was named an NAIA All-American Scholar-Athlete for his work in the classroom, and he was voted second team NAIA All-American for his efforts on the soccer pitch.  The previous season, 1995, he was honorable mention All-American on the field.

After playing four years at UIW, 1993 through 1996, he completed his eligibility as the all-time leader in games played (95) and assists (65).  Those marks continue to stand, now 10 years later.  On the all-time points listing, he is seventh with 121.  In 1996 his 24 assists led the nation.  Three times his UIW teams played in the national tournament and in 1997 he was named to the Umbro Select College All-Star Classic.

Tim received his degree from UIW in 1997 in the field of communication arts. He graduated with cum laude honors with a 3.5 grade point average.  He played one year of professional soccer in Austin.  He holds a USSF “B” National Coaching license and an NSCAA Advanced National Diploma.  Currently, he is director of coaching for the Lake Travis Soccer Club in Austin.

DR. BUD CURTIS

Dr. Bud CurtisThe principal in the Texas Orthopedic Shoulder and Sports Surgery facility in San Antonio, and a clinical associate professor of Orthopedic surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center, Dr. Bud Curtis is better known to literally hundreds of Incarnate Word student-athletes as the man overseeing their well being.  The chief athletic physician for UIW athletes, Dr. Curtis has been on staff at the University since 1988, work that he continues today. 

A native of Gonzales, Texas, Dr. Curtis earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Texas in Austin before moving to San Antonio for his doctor of medicine degree in at the University of Texas Health Science Center.  He performed his internship and residence in Orthopedic surgery at the same facility.  Thereafter he had a fellowship in shoulder surgery before going to New York City for a clinical sabbatical at New York Orthopedic Hospital. 

Returning to San Antonio, he has been an Orthopedic consultant and team physician for a wide variety of professional teams such at the Spurs, Missions, football Riders and the San Antonio entry in the Canadian Football League.  He too has been associated with numerous public school districts in the area--San Antonio, Boerne, Harlandale, Judson, Northside.  He has worked with the US Swimming Team and the US Junior National Swimming Team.

BROOKE (HOPKINS) REECE

Brooke Hopkins Reece Brooke Hopkins departed Incarnate Word unique in several areas.  In the fall of 1999, after the University made the switch from the NAIA to the NCAA Division II, she became the first UIW student-athlete to be voted All-American (NSCAA), an honor which she repeated in 2001   In 1998, she had been All-American as her team competed in the NAIA.  Then, she departed UIW as the all-time leading scorer in women’s soccer with 238 points and as the all-time leading goal-producer (107), marks that likely will stand the tests of time.  Three consecutive years she was the Heartland Conference most valuable player, a feat that is yet to be matched.

After earning her bachelor’s degree in 2001 and her master’s degree in 2003, she was a member of the US National “B” team while experiencing trials with the New York and Washington squads of the WUSA.  She has been a soccer coach at all levels from elementary schools in San Antonio to the women’s program at Columbus State University in Georgia.  Currently, she is a coaches education and training manager for the Washington Special Olympics in Seattle, Wash.  And, she continues to coach youth soccer teams in that city.

Not to lose her touch on the pitch, Brooke is playing soccer for the Seattle Sounder Saints of the W-League, the highest level of competition in the area.

JAVIER RUIZ

Javier RuizHe is only of only two Incarnate Word athletes to win a national championship while competing for UIW.  In the spring of 1996, he and Jonas Andersson (2005 Hall of Fame) captured the NAIA doubles crown in the NAIA.  That same spring, as well as the season of 1995, he was voted NAIA All-American after UIW finished fourth in the team competition for the University highest ending ever for a team sport.

Javier and Jonas won another national doubles title, this one the Rolex Small College title.  He even played one season with the UIW soccer team after his tennis eligibility was done.  He received his UIW batchelor’s degree in the spring of 1998 in the fields of international business and business administration.

A native of Mexico, he now resides in Mexico City.  He worked four years in sales with Aceites Industriales.  For the past five years he has been a marketing representative for Nike in Mexico City.  Among his duties there have been work with the Mexico National Soccer team in advance of the 2006 World Cup competition.  Also, he is involved with a program between Nike de Mexico and Fundacion Merced.

WILL CARBONARA

Will Carbonara

Upon completing his undergraduate program for a bachelor’s degree in business administration, Will Carbonara was the recipient of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, one of a limited number of grants for the entire United States.  That was the crowning moment for his undergraduate career, a time when he maintained a 3.955 grade point average and graduated summa cum laude. 

Because of his efforts in the classroom, he was National Dean’s List, he was Verizon Academic All-America, and he was a member of several honorary scholastic organizations such as Alpha Chi, and he received multiple scholarships such as The Texas Society of CPA’s Outstanding Accounting Student award.  He then earned a UIW master’s degree in business administration while compiling a 3.94 GPA.                                              

On the baseball field, Will, in his senior year 2002, raised the Incarnate Word bar when he set a school record with a batting average of .460.  That mark got his career average to .395 which remains second all-time at UIW.  That same season he was the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Player of the Year. 

In the Heartland Conference, he was on the academic President’s Honor Roll two years and he was the league’s hitter of the week.  He was voted All-Heartland Conference.  That .460 batting average was a Heartland record also.

After completing his eligibility at Incarnate Word he signed a professional contract with the Baltimore Orioles and in the Gulf Coast Rookie League led his team in runs, home runs, doubles and RBI.

Currently Will lives in his hometown of Cuero, Texas, where he is an account executive with JHC Insurance Agency.  In Cuero he has been a director and treasurer of the Chamber of Commerce, he is a director of the Cuero Development Corporation and is a director for the DeWitt County Historical Commission.  He is a Rotarian, a Lion and a youth leader at St. Michael’s Church.

 

HOLLY BARROW SMITH

Holly Barrow SmithHolly Barrow came to Incarnate Word in the fall of 1993 as a widely-recruited soccer player out of San Antonio’s Madison High School.  A year later, in 1994, she had proved herself to the point of being named an NAIA All-American.  That season found UIW graduating its top scorers so for the 1995 season Holly moved up top to play forward full time.  Again, she was NAIA All-America along with being voted NAIA National All-Tournament, while playing a new position.  After her senior year of 1996 she again was NAIA All-America, for the third straight year.

Despite playing up top fulltime for one-half of her Incarnate Word career, she is to this day the fifth all-time leading scorer in UIW history and by a wide margin over the sixth leading point-producer.  Also, she remains Top Six in three other UIW statistical categories, games played (6), goals scored (5) and assists (5).  Over the four years Holly played at Incarnate Word the women’s soccer teams were a cumulative 48-22-4 and played in two NAIA national tournaments.

In addition to her All-American honors, Holly was a GTE Academic All-District performer and was a conference all-academic athlete.  Back on the soccer field, she three times was all-region and once all-district.  Twice she was the Heart of Texas Conference most valuable player and three times was all-conference.

In 1997 she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in physical education.

After her playing time was completed, she remained on the Incarnate Word campus to work two years as the soccer team’s assistant coach.  In the spring of 2000, she completed work for her master’s degree in sports management.  Between 2002 and 2006 she was a pre-school teacher in both Lubbock and Austin and for a year she worked as a sales representative for Innisbrook.

Currently Holly is deeply involved with the activities of her family centering on their church where she teaches both Sunday school and vacation Bible school.  Not ever being too far away from her sport of soccer, she is a coach for NEYSO U10 and U7 Spirit Girl’s Soccer.  Additionally she is a volunteer for the Parent Teachers Association at a local elementary school.
