Incarnate Word is a faith-based, Catholic-related university. No discussion needed. Each fall for the past 29 years there has been the National Catholic Cross Country Invitational. And for the first time ever, UIW will have both men’s and women’s teams entered.

The championships are set for Friday (September 14), and they begin at 4:15 p.m. for the women’s 5K race followed closely at 5 p.m. by the men’s five-mile event. A year ago, 30-plus Catholic colleges and universities from across the nation were represented.

And, it will be run over the Burke Memorial Golf Course at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, which is, many will contend, the most Catholic of them all.

MEN RUNNERS PICKED FOURTH -- posted Thursday, August 16 2007

In the annual pre-season poll conducted for the Heartland Conference, Incarnate Word’s male runners are expected to finish fourth in the league’s title chase.

The coach’s poll just announced says newcomer Newman of Kansas is the favorite going into the 2007 fall season. A year ago the Jets did not compete for the team title but did place three runners in the Heartland’s top 10. That showing pushes Newman into this year favorite’s roll.

The inclusion of Newman in 2007 pushed Incarnate Word down one notch from last year’s third place finish.
