2005 ALUMNA OF DISTINCTION FOR PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT

image

ANTOINETTE POLLOCK MULVANEY, BA English 1978

Antoinette Pollock Mulvaney stands out as the first undergraduate alumna to achieve the rank of full Professor of Business Law and this in the College of Business at Lamar University since 1989.  To make it all the more interesting, her undergraduate major at Incarnate Word was English.  Toni also went on for a JD degree in law at  St. Mary’s University in 1981. Until 1986 she was a trial lawyer in Beaumont and then for three years a trial lawyer in general civic practice with her husband in the Law Offices of Tom Mulvaney.

In addition to her teaching in the business law program, she is an active athlete and a leader in her church and the community.  At Lamar, Toni is a member of the Lamar University Honors Council, Director of the Lamar University Ambassadors Program, and chairs the joint Lamar University/Texas Tech Law School Scholarship Committee.  In 1993 she received the Regents Merit Award for distinguished teaching, and additional teaching awards in 1995, 1997 and 1999.

True to the Incarnate Word mission, her volunteer work for her church and the community is equally impressive.  This year she received the first annual Diocese of Beaumont “Faithful Steward Award” for outstanding service to her parish and faith community, St. Anne’s.  She continues to serve on the St. Anne School Foundation, served as chair of the Pastoral Council, directed the Vacation Bible School, and is a director of the Friends of Jesus and Mary Prayer Groups for elementary school children.  For the Diocese of Beaumont she continues to serve as a member of the Retirement Committee.

Since 2001 Toni has served as President of the St. Anne ACTS Core Team (sponsoring adult and teen retreats for St. Anne and other churches in the diocese), and since 2004 has been a member of Southeast Texas ACTS Mission Chapter.  Also in 2004 she was an organizer of San Felipe de Jesus Mission to Brownsville, TX and Matamoros, Mexico in cooperation with Habitat for Mexico.  The mission includes building houses, providing dental care and other basic human needs for the poorest parish in the U.S.

Also, she is a member of the St. Katharine Drexel Humanitarians Neighborhood HealthCheck in Beaumont and chairs the Birthright of Beaumont Board of Directors.

One thing about Toni has not changed since her Incarnate Word student days when she played tennis with the late Professor of Theatre Ronnie Ibbs.  She is still a top tennis player.  Her United States Tennis Association league team has qualified for sectionals two years in a row.  She is an important part of the team ranked at 4.5, the highest level in Beaumont.

And of course Toni’s life is fully involved with the life of her family, her husband Judge Thomas Mulvaney, and their children, Katherine, 18, Erin, 17 and Daniel, 14.  In addition, her mother, Mrs.  Jo Pollock, holds a degree in Medical Technology from Incarnate Word College.

Recently Toni reported that on one weekend she attended four basketball games and five baseball games in Beaumont watching her son Daniel play to two championships; another weekend watched her daughter compete in the State Mock Trial Competition, trying 5 lawsuits in 3 days; and another weekend with her daughter in Brownsville, planned a service project in Mexico, to build houses for the poor.  Her family, especially her husband,  are also equally supportive and active in her efforts.  “It is,” she says, “a full and wonderful life.”

Indeed it is, and a distinguished one.

UIW NAMES NEW MEN’S SOCCER COACH

http://www.uiwtx.edu/~athletic/sports/soccer_men/news.shtml#newsitemEEEkllFylEHrykFVXD

With the intent of keeping intact its national level of competition and recognition, and seeking another level of technical knowledge, the University of the Incarnate Word today named Mike Jeffries its new men's soccer coach. Jeffries, taking the reins of the Cardinals program immediately, comes to UIW after most recently being head coach of the Dallas Burn of Major League Soccer for three years.

"We eagerly anticipate the arrival of Mike Jeffries and we feel strongly that he will continue the excellence which has been established at Incarnate Word for men's soccer," UIW Director of Athletics Mark Papich said.  "Mike is another in a line of highly-respected coaches here and we think he provides another level of experience and expertise.  We reached Division II's Elite Eight last fall and we fully expect to remain at that level."

The Cardinals in 2004 finished as the fifth ranked team in the nation after winning both the regular and post-season titles in the Southwest Soccer Conference and winning the Midwest Region championship.

PHONATHONS FOR 2004-2005

image

The school year is coming to an end, with record enrollments, and the university and the two high schools are winding up the annual Phonathons in support of the Annual Fund for fiscal year 2005.  Gifts received in response to the pre-call letters were well over $30,000, a wonderful beginning last fall.   UIW is now at $130, 138 in Phonathon gifts and pledges, SACHS at $11,962 and IWHS at $ 16,055.

We appreciate your continued support, and we hope you will continue to respond to this appeal.   The cost of education in the private sector is always rising despite our careful and prudent use of resources.  The annual fund impacts students directly and they need you more than ever.  Please be as generous as you possibly can whenever you can.  The university advancement team made calls throughout the year and the two high schools had periods of intensive calls by volunteers last fall and this spring.   After that our advancement team  followed up on alumni/ae who could not be reached during this intensified calling period, and also sending reminders of pledges.

This year Patrick Greener coordinated the efforts of all three Phonathons, and we trust that whatever and whenever you pledge can be completed before the end of the fiscal year on May 31, 2005.

Please remember that this year is the 100th anniversary of St Anthony Catholic High School.  UIW and IWHS will celebrate their 125th anniversary in 2006.

UIW 2006 ALUMNI DIRECTORY

IWC and UIW graduates and former students will receive a mailing this summer from the Harris Publishing Company in preparation for the next Alumni Directory.  The directory is scheduled to come out in April, 2006 as part of our 127th or quasquicentennial celebration, and tenth year as a university.  You will be able to respond by regular mail or email, and for many this may involve simple updates from the 2000 Directory if you elected to be included.

We understand that IWHS and SACHS will be producing alumni/ae directories of their own.

UIW BOOKSTORE DISCOUNT CARDS AVAILABLE

If you are in or near San Antonio, or plan to visit, the UIW Bookstore has made available 10% discount cards for our faithful readers.  So if you plan to do some shopping, you get a discount on each visit with the card, and after the fifth visit you get a free gift!   Discounts do not apply to textbooks, food items, and regularly priced software.

The cards are available in the UIW Alumni Office on campus, or we can also mail one to you.

ALUMNI/AE NETWORKING UP AND RUNNING
UIW, IWHS, SACHS Graduates Welcome

It was a long wait, but an Alumni/ae Networking Network in a new version is up and running.  What started with a network of only three alumni has now grown to over 600 members from IWC, UIW, IWHS and SACHS.

Some of the earlier problems have been corrected.  The new system allows anyone to view the network, but to be on the network you must register.  Those who were on the old network have been carried over, and we have your username and password.  Those new to the network create their own username and password.  Alumni/ae are in control of the entry and all updates.  Passwords can be changed but not the username.  If you want a new username you need to create a new entry and have the administrator delete the old one.  Duplicate entries will be deleted as discovered as this is confusing to those who use the network.  http://www.uiw.edu/alumni/anet/index.htm

Remember please that usernames and passwords should not exceed eight characters.  Less is better.  If you want to communicate with classmates and other alumni put a message in Class Notes.  The network will function best when employment and marketplace fields are completed.  Other fields are helpful so check them all out.  All information provided is voluntary, although an email address is required.  ADCaP and Virtual University alumni, when you are on the network, please look at the education section and make sure the appropriate box is checked.

SPECIAL NOTE:  Registration on the network is NOT automatic.  The entry must first be approved by the administrator to verify alumni/ae status.  This process is done at least once a day, Monday to Friday.  Yes, we have already had some trying to make bogus entries.

Please report any problems to dickm@universe.uiwtx.edu  after June 1 lisas@.uiwtx.edu

If someone contacts you through the network and says they attended or is attending one of the schools, and you want verification, we will be glad to help.

Help us to Re-found the University for the Future” *   This concept is an adaptation of the directions of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word at their last General Chapter which urges the members to “re-found the Congregation.”  This means to recapture the original founding spirit of 1869 which included dedication, a spirit of  fearless innovation, Jesus’ Gospel values of service and courage, all within the context of faith.  For the university, this means an examination of our founding core values as they continue to animate our mission in the 21st century.

FAVORED FOOTNOTE

May is the month set aside in our nation to honor nurses and teachers.  We join in this national salute and celebrate and thank all of those who care for the health and growth of people in mind, body and spirit.  Cynics might say we can survive without you, but then it would only be mere survival, no quality and no joy.
