UIW and McNAY MUSEUM THEATRE EXHIBIT
In a joint effort, the University of the Incarnate Word and the McNay Art Museum will host Metaphor and Irony 2: František Tröster and Contemporary Czech Theatre Design, Feb. 13 – April 3. The one-of-a kind exhibit features the work of František Tröster, considered the most influential Czech designer of the mid-twentieth century. The exhibit features a variety of works including costumes, puppets, designs, production photos and models which will be exhibited jointly at the UIW Semmes Gallery and the Tobin Gallery of Theatre Arts at the McNay Art Museum.
Metaphor and Irony 2 displays the importance of theatre in Czech life. In a time of Socialist repression, the theatre provided an outlet for those seeking the truth; design, therefore played a pivotal role in both art and politics. The exhibit will feature works by other designers influenced by the work of Tröster as well.
“It is very exciting that we are doing our first collaboration with the McNay Art Museum and the Tobin Foundation,” said Margaret Mitchell, University of the Incarnate Word Associate Professor of Theatre Arts. Metaphor and Irony 2: František Tröster and Contemporary Czech Theatre Design was organized by the Ohio State University – Lima and The Theatre Institute – Prague, in partnership with the Ohio State University – Columbus, Bowling Green State University, The University of Toledo, the Marion Koogler McNay Art Museum, the University of the Incarnate Word and the Tobin Foundation for Theatre Arts funded by the Tobin Endowment.
Additional funding for the exhibit provided by the Russell Hill Rogers Fund for the Arts and JPMorgan Chase.

STUDENTS PREPARE TO OPERATE KUIW RADIO
By Kimberly Rodriguez
LOGOS STAFF WRITER
Three University of the Incarnate Word students have been chosen to run KUIW, the Internet radio station set to go on the air officially March 23.
Samantha Najera will be the program director, Samantha Duncan will serve as operations manager and Gary Pan will be the webmaster."KUIW'S format will be music with a slice of entertainment," said Najera, a sophomore communication arts major. Currently, the radio crew is working on the production side of the station by getting everyone familiar with equipment and the studio.
KUIW is part of the $3 million collaborative Title V cooperative federal grant awarded to Incarnate Word and Northwest Vista College to strengthen the experience of first-year students at both institutions. The station's adviser is Hank McDonnell, an assistant professor of communication arts.
"There are 29 students enrolled in the class and 15 volunteers," said McDonnell. The class meets 6-8:45 p.m. Mondays in AD 265. Volunteers of all majors are encouraged to attend the meetings as KUIW is looking for DJ's. Meanwhile, Pan will design, update and maintain KUIW's web site.
"Our goal is to promote KUIW through the website," Pan said. "We are doing our job to set up the website now and I believe that in no time we can put it on the server."
2005 ALUMNA OF DISTINCTION
Alumna Honoree for the May 7th commencement will be Antoinette Pollock Mulvaney, BA ‘78. Toni earned her BA in English in 1978 and went on to study both law and business. Married to Judge Thomas F. Mulvaney of Beaumont, her mother is also an alumna and her daughters are looking at UIW. What is truly interesting about Toni is that she has gone from a BA in English to her position as Full Professor of Business and a lawyer at Lamar University.
ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM ALUMNAE

AMERICAN STROKE ASSOCIATION BENEFIT
I have some news. Are you sitting down? My husband and I are training for a MARATHON. That's right! Actually, I'm getting in shape to walk a half marathon (yes, that's 13.1 miles last time I checked) and David's going for big Kahuna, the full 26.2-mile walk. We are also raising money for the American Stroke Association "Train to End Stroke" program.
I know a little about the debilitating disease since my father died in 1982 after his stroke. He was unable to speak or communicate as a result; the Stroke took him from us before his body was ready to give up. Strokes are the No. 3 leading cause of death, ranking behind only "diseases of the heart" and all forms of cancer combined. We believe that our involvement in the "Train to End Stroke" program is a great win-win opportunity. Just as daunting as the walking, what may be our even bigger challenge is the fund raising. We hope to raise $9,800 (a goal of $4,900 each) for the American Stroke Association. And that's where you can help out. Please join us in reaching our fundraising goal and helping to end stroke by making a generous tax-deductible donation. We will both be walking in honor of my dear father, Charles Calvert, who never got to see his youngest daughter happily married and whom David has heard so much about but never had the opportunity to meet. If you’d like, it would be our pleasure to also walk in honor of your own "stroke hero" or loved one. To make a donation on my behalf online, please go to teamsanantonio.kintera.org/Kona2005. From there, look on the left side of the page and scroll down to find the "Donors and Visitors” heading; click on 'Sponsor Participant" and then enter my name (just first and last, linda jacobson) when prompted. That will take you to a secure page for making your donation. I can also send you a form (or you can print one out at the website) if you'd prefer to send a check. (You can also make a donation on David's behalf by following the same instructions but entering his first last name, david jacobson.) Thank you for taking the time to read this and for your support! Wish us luck!
Linda Calvert Jacobson, BA, ‘90

TRIP TO HOLY LAND

Holy Land Pilgrimage, Ancient Women of Bible Lands and Contemporary Women Working for Peace. May 20 to June 1, 2005, Led by Sister Martha Ann Kirk, Th.D., author of Women of Bible Lands: A Pilgrimage to Compassion and Wisdom (See www.WomensGlobalConnection.org, Publications). This Women’s Global Connection pilgrimage provides opportunities to meet some of the Christians, Jews, and Muslims of the WGC on-line community. Men, as well as women are welcome. See Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Bethany, Jericho, Qumran, the Dead Sea, Hebron, Tel Beersheba, Samaria, Nazareth, Magdala, the Sea of Galilee, Capernaum, and the Mount of the Beatitudes. Approximate cost: $2600 plus lunches. For information kirk@universe.uiwtx.edu or call 210-829-3854.

The new school year is underway, with record enrollments, and the university and the two high schools are beginning the annual Phonathons in support of the Annual Fund for fiscal year 2005. Gifts received in response to the pre-call letters were well over $30,000, a wonderful start. UIW is now at $124, 976 in Phonathon gifts and pledges, SACHS at $10,312 and IWHS at $ 16,055.
We appreciate your continued support, and we hope you will continue to respond to this appeal. The cost of education in the private sector is always rising despite our careful and prudent use of resources. The annual fund impacts students directly and they need you more than ever. Please be as generous as you possibly can. The university advancement team will be making calls throughout the year and the two high schools had periods of intensive calls by volunteers last fall. After that our advancement team students will follow up on alumni/ae who could not be reached during this intensified calling period, and sending reminders of pledges.
This year Patrick Greener coordinated the efforts of all three Phonathons, and we trust that whatever and whenever you pledge can be completed before the end of the fiscal year on May 31, 2005.
Please remember that this year is the 100th anniversary of St Anthony Catholic High School. UIW and IWHS will celebrate their 125th anniversary in 2006.

It was a long wait, but an Alumni/ae Networking Network in a new version is up and running. What started with a network of only three alumni has now grown to over 600 members from IWC, UIW, IWHS and SACHS.
Some of the earlier problems have been corrected. The new system allows anyone to view the network, but to be on the network you must register. Those who were on the old network have been carried over, and we have your username and password. Those new to the network create their own username and password. Alumni/ae are in control of the entry and all updates. Passwords can be changed but not the username. If you want a new username you need to create a new entry and have the administrator delete the old one. Duplicate entries will be deleted as discovered as this is confusing to those who use the network. www.uiw.edu/alumni/anet/index.htm
Remember please that usernames and passwords should not exceed eight characters. Less is better. If you want to communicate with classmates and other alumni put a message in Class Notes. The network will function best when employment and marketplace fields are completed. Other fields are helpful so check them all out. All information provided is voluntary, although an email address is required. ADCaP and Virtual University alumni, when you are on the network, please look at the education section and make sure the appropriate box is checked.
SPECIAL NOTE: Registration on the network is NOT automatic. The entry must first be approved by the administrator to verify alumni/ae status. This process is done at least once a day, Monday to Friday. Yes, we have already had some trying to make bogus entries.
Please report any problems to dickm@universe.uiwtx.edu If an alum email address does not go through it may be an old email address not updated on the network. If someone contacts you through the network and says they attended or is attending one of the schools, and you want verification, we will be glad to help.

"Help us to Re-found the University for the Future" * This concept is an adaptation of the directions of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word at their last General Chapter which urges the members to "re-found the Congregation." This means to recapture the original founding spirit of 1869 which included dedication, a spirit of fearless innovation, Jesus' Gospel values of service and courage, all within the context of faith. For the university, this means an examination of our founding core values as they continue to animate our mission in the 21st century.S
