THE KATHRYN COFFEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Kathryn Coffey Memorial Scholarship was established in 2004 by Mike Coffey as a memorial to his late wife.  The scholarship was established to support undergraduate students who are admitted as majors in one of the professional areas of the university:  nursing, education [teaching at any level], nutrition, business or to the School of Pharmacy.  To be eligible for the award a student must show evidence of academic potential and demonstrate financial need.

This scholarship is awarded each year to a qualified student of the University of the Incarnate Word and is renewable if the student maintains an overall GPA of 3.0 on the 4.0 scale, continues in the major covered by this scholarship, and continues to demonstrate financial need.

IWHS ALUMNA ESTABLISHES SCHOLARSHIP

Celine McAllen Cozad, IWHS ’53---The young woman, who was the first to have a dorm room in the then, newly-completed facilities of Incarnate Word High School in 1950, has secured yet another first with a major contribution to the future of IWHS. Through her recent gift, Celine Cozad has established the first IWHS tuition endowment assisting deserving students.

Incarnate Word High School was founded by the Sisters to give young women an opportunity for an excellent education.  Celine Cozad’s gift exemplifies the Shamrock tradition of helping Incarnate Word High School live up to its important mission.  Thank you, Celine!

PHONATHONS FOR 2004-2005

image

The new school year is underway, with record enrollments, and the university and the two high schools are beginning the annual Phonathons in support of the Annual Fund for fiscal year 2005.  Gifts received in response to the pre-call letters were well over $30,000, a wonderful start.   UIW is now at $123,781 in Phonathon gifts and pledges, SACHS at $10,312 and IWHS at $ 16,055.

We appreciate your continued support, and we hope you will continue to respond to this appeal when a student calls you.   The cost of education in the private sector is always rising despite our careful and prudent use of resources.  The annual fund impacts students directly and they need you more than ever.  Please be as generous as you possibly can.  The university advancement team will be making calls throughout the year and the two high schools had periods of intensive calls by volunteers last fall.   After that our advancement team students will follow up on alumni/ae who could not be reached during this intensified calling period.

This year Patrick Greener is coordinating the efforts of all three Phonathons, and we trust that whatever and whenever you pledge can be completed before the end of the fiscal year on May 31, 2005.

Please remember that this year is the 100th anniversary of St Anthony Catholic High School.  UIW and IWHS will celebrate their 125th anniversary in 2006.

ALUMNI/AE NETWORKING UP AND RUNNING UIW, IWHS, SACHS Graduates Welcome

It was a long wait, but an Alumni/ae Networking Network in a new version is up and running.  What started with a network of only three alumni has now grown to over 600 members from IWC, UIW, IWHS and SACHS.

Some of the earlier problems have been corrected.  The new system allows anyone to view the network, but to be on the network you must register.  Those who were on the old network have been carried over, and we have your username and password.  Those new to the network create their own username and password.  Alumni/ae are in control of the entry and all updates.  Passwords can be changed but not the username.  If you want a new username you need to create a new entry and have the administrator delete the old one.  Duplicate entries will be deleted as discovered as this is confusing to those who use the network.  www.uiw.edu/alumni/anet/index.htm

Remember please that usernames and passwords should not exceed eight characters.  Less is better.  If you want to communicate with classmates and other alumni put a message in Class Notes.  The network will function best when employment and marketplace fields are completed.  Other fields are helpful so check them all out.  All information provided is voluntary, although an email address is required.  ADCaP and Virtual University alumni, when you are on the network, please look at the education section and make sure the appropriate box is checked.

SPECIAL NOTE:  Registration on the network is NOT automatic.  The entry must first be approved by the administrator to verify alumni/ae status. This process is done at least once a day, Monday to Friday.  Yes, we have already had some trying to make bogus entries.

Please report any problems to dickm@universe.uiwtx.edu   If an alum email address does not go through it may be an old email address not updated on the network.  If someone contacts you through the network and says they attended or is attending one of the schools, and you want verification, we will be glad to help.

"Help us to Re-found the University for the Future" * This concept is an adaptation of the directions of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word at their last General Chapter which urges the members to "re-found the Congregation." This means to recapture the original founding spirit of 1869 which included dedication, a spirit of fearless innovation, Jesus' Gospel values of service and courage, all within the context of faith. For the university, this means an examination of our founding core values as they continue to animate our mission in the 21st century.
