The most recent addition to the UIW campus at Christmas is the 48-foot cut steel Nativity given to us by the Menger Hotel in San Antonio. Menger hotel Public Relations director, Ernesto Malacara, arranged for the gift.  His son, Martin, is a 2003 graduate of UIW. The work is in four sections:  Journey to Bethlehem, Shepherds in the Field, The Three Kings and The Stable of Bethlehem.  It was constructed by eighty students of Fox Tech High School in San Antonio who decided to use the German art form known as Schwibbogen, in 3/16” steel rather than wood.

ALUMNAE CELEBRATE THREE KINGS

Nearly every year since graduation in 1946 Mary Helen [Pinkie] Devine Pinner and her classmates have assembled for a Three Kings Party on January 6th.  For many of those nearly sixty years Pinkie hosted the party with husband, Bill, at their home in Kingville.  In more recent years they moved the venue to Brackenridge Villa on the last day for the campus Christmas lights.  An appropriate sendoff indeed!  IWC graduates of the 1940s join the gathering, usually helping with a home made goodie, sometimes accompanied by grown children.  There is only one rule: children as infants may be brought once to show off.  After that they need to be grown up when they return.

PHARMACY SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT GROWS

image

On December 1, 2004 Provost Dr Terry Dicianna [right] and School of Pharmacy Dean Dr. Arcelia Johnson-Fannin [second from left] attended the Christmas dinner hosted  by the Bexar County Pharmacy Association.  BCPA President  Raquel Salinas and board member Celso Cuellar, Jr.  presented UIW with a check of $5000 for their endowed pharmacy scholarship.  This brings their total to $15K of a commitment of $35K.  Also, Dr. Johnson-Fannin was made an honorary member of BCPA.  She has become a very positive ambassador for UIW with the medical community.

Anyone who wishes may contribute to this particular endowment.

DR. MUELLER HONORED

image

Dr. Mary Louise Mueller, Professor of Religious Studies, was honored with the title of Professor Emerita at commencement on December 11, 2004.  Dr. Mueller’s students span many, many years and she stays in contact with many, many of them.  Congratulations!

The Alumni Office welcomed the December 2004 graduates at a pizza party after graduation rehearsal, and Julia Munoz and Travis Lamkin won commemorative UIW plates in a random drawing.  Ben Tolleson received a special present for helping to show how the traditional caps and gowns are worn.

ALUMNI/AE NETWORKING UP AND RUNNING UIW, IWHS, SACHS Graduates Welcome

It was a long wait, but an Alumni/ae Networking Network in a new version is up and running.  What started with a network of only three alumni has now grown to over 600 members from IWC, UIW, IWHS and SACHS.

Some of the earlier problems have been corrected.  The new system allows anyone to view the network, but to be on the network you must register.  Those who were on the old network have been carried over, and we have your username and password.  Those new to the network create their own username and password.  Alumni/ae are in control of the entry and all updates.  Passwords can be changed but not the username.  If you want a new username you need to create a new entry and have the administrator delete the old one.  Duplicate entries will be deleted as discovered, as this is confusing to those who use the network.  www.uiw.edu/alumni/anet/index.htm

Remember please that usernames and passwords should not exceed eight characters.  Less is better.  If you want to communicate with classmates and other alumni put a message in Class Notes.  The network will function best when employment and marketplace fields are completed.  Other fields are helpful so check them all out.  All information provided is voluntary, although an email address is required.  ADCaP and Virtual University alumni, when you are on the network, please look at the education section and make sure the appropriate box is checked.

SPECIAL NOTE:  Registration on the network is NOT automatic.  The entry must first be approved by the administrator to verify alumni/ae status.  This process is done at least once a day, Monday to Friday.  Yes, we have already had some trying to make bogus entries.

Please report any problems to dickm@universe.uiwtx.edu   If an alum email address does not go through it may be an old email address not updated on the network.  If someone contacts you through the network and says they attended or is attending one of the schools, and you want verification, we will be glad to help.

SACHS RECEIVES MAJOR GIFT

A gift of $10,000 toward the construction of a new amphitheater was received from SACHS parents Mark and Bebe Wittig.  Mr. Wittig attended St. Anthony as a Jr. Seminarian in mid-sixties and all four of Mark and Bebe's sons will have graduated from there.  Their youngest son Luke, will graduate in May, 2005.

The total cost will be $40,000 and the PTC has pledged $10,000.

SACHS STARTS NEW TREND

SACHS has started a new trend for alumni by reserving the football field on the Saturday after Thanksgiving each year.   This year SACHS had 47 alums attend the 3rd Annual Flag Football Frenzy and the attendance has grown each year.  This year four referees from the San Antonio Chapter of TASO (Texas Association of Sports Officials) donated their time to officiate the event.  Their presence provided safe play and prevented tempers from flaring.  In the past, every student seminarian, no matter how big or small, had to play football because the student population was so small.  The games have been a great bonding and a shared emotional experience for many of the alums. It provides a fun way to reunite, to reminisce and to work-off turkey day tonnage.

CARDINALS GET TWO ALL-AMERICANS AS ONLY TEXAS SCHOOL WITH A PAIR

Lubomir Bogdanov and Terry Alvino are the latest University of the Incarnate Word soccer players to be voted All-America in what is becoming a long line of such honorees. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America has announced its elite squads for the 2004 season and the two UIW stars are among those honored for Division II.

Bogdanov, a junior forward from Sophia, Bulgaria, was elected to the 11-player first team.  After leading his team in scoring and into the Elite Eight of the national tournament, Bogdanov jumped two notches after being third team the last two years. In a season when the Cardinals went 18-4-1, won the Midwest Regional championship, and finished the year ranked number five in the nation, Bogdanov led with his 54 points including 23 goals.  Those individual numbers were 13th and 12th in the nation respectively. Bogdanov earned All-American honors in the classroom as earlier he was voted to the second team Scholar All-America by the NSCAA.  Studying mathematics, Bogdanov has maintained a 3.70 grade point average over his time at UIW.

The second Cardinal honored by the NSCAA was junior midfielder Terry Alvino.  A native of St. Louis, Mo., Alvino was voted to the third team All-America.  This was Alvino's first time to be listed on the national squad after being All-Midwest Region the past two years.

After Thanksgiving the Phonathon honored a few of their own callers for accomplishments during the fall semester. Top, Sophomore biology major Johanna Flores had the most alumni to pledge and had the highest CEI, caller efficiency index; Middle, Sharnique Cochran was the most reliable caller and had the most calls in one night and the largest amount of pledges, also in one night; Bottom, journalism major Sharna Cox had the fewest number of pledge refusals.  They’ll be back on the phones after the holidays.

PHONATHONS FOR 2004-2005

image

The new school year is underway, with record enrollments, and the university and the two high schools are beginning the annual Phonathons in support of the Annual Fund for fiscal year 2005.  Gifts received in response to the pre-call letters were well over $30,000, a wonderful start.   UIW is now at $112,000 in Phonathon gifts and pledges, SACHS at $ and IWHS at $.

We appreciate your continued support, and we hope you will continue to respond to this appeal when a student calls you. The cost of education in the private sector is always rising despite our careful and prudent use of resources.  The annual fund impacts students directly and they need you more than ever. Please be as generous as you possibly can.  The university advancement team will be making calls throughout the year and the two high schools had periods of intensive calls by volunteers last fall. After that our advancement team students will follow up on alumni/ae who could not be reached during this intensified calling period.

This year Patrick Greener is coordinating the efforts of all three Phonathons, and we trust that whatever and whenever you pledge can be completed before the end of the fiscal year on May 31, 2005.

Please remember that this year is the 100th anniversary of St Anthony Catholic High School.  UIW and IWHS will celebrate their 125th anniversary in 2006.

ALUMNA’S INTERESTING NEW CAREER

Jean Huth Leinbach, BA ’75 also earned her M.A. in psychology from Trinity University and after that was in the practice of psychotherapy for many years in Dallas and San Antonio.  She also enjoyed working with dogs and also took courses and workshops in animal behavior and related courses.  Upon retirement she became a full-time animal behaviorist and dog trainer.  She says it is fun and rewarding and her new business is called Best Foot Forward for Man’s Best Friend.  She also has an illustrated book published in 2002 called Dog Tales.  Jean has three grown children and five grandchildren, a great blessing.  She encourages the young to follow dreams, as it is great to love what you do and watch as it grows and blossoms, while helping others, both animal and human.  To order her book call Jean at 210 822-7415.

JUST FOR INSPIRATION

If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it.

"Help us to Re-found the University for the Future" * This concept is an adaptation of the directions of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word at their last General Chapter which urges the members to "re-found the Congregation." This means to recapture the original founding spirit of 1869 which included dedication, a spirit of fearless innovation, Jesus' Gospel values of service and courage, all within the context of faith. For the university, this means an examination of our founding core values as they continue to animate our mission in the 21st century.
