COL. LAURA ALVARADO, USAF NAMED 2004 ALUMNA OF DISTINCTION

Two December commencement ceremonies for the university will be held on Saturday, December 11, 2004 in the McDermott Convocation Center.  The morning ceremony is at 11:00 a.m. and the afternoon ceremony at 5:00 p.m.

Col. Laura Alvarado, USAF NC, BSN 1978 will receive an Alumna of Distinction Award for 2004 at the afternoon ceremony.

COLONEL LAURA ALVARADO
imageColonel Laura Alvarado is Vice Commander, 311th Human Systems Wing, Brooks City-Base, Texas. She supports the commander in directing the Air Force’s single special mission wing focused on the many facets of aerospace medicine. The wing develops and sustains human-centered products (more than 140 programs), conducts original research, educates and trains more than 5,000 students/year in the aerospace medicine disciplines, provides consultative services worldwide, and serves as the Environmental Safety and Occupational Health (ESOH) focus—all aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and combat power.

Prior to becoming the 311th HSW Vice Commander, Colonel Alvarado was the commander and dean of the U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine at Brooks City-Base.

Colonel Alvarado earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing cum Laude from the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio and a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas at Arlington.  She holds advanced certification in Nursing Administration from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

As the recipient of National Health Services Corps (USPHS) scholarship, Colonel Alvarado began her career in the uniformed services as a first lieutenant assigned to the Indian Health Service, Zuni Comprehensive Medical Center, Zuni, N.M., from 1978-1980.  In September 1980, she made a lateral transfer to the Air Force and was assigned to Wilford Hall Medical Center, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, where she managed the Nutritional Support Program for this 750-bed hospital.  In addition to providing individualized patient care, she taught principles of intravenous and enteral nutrition therapy to nursing personnel and medical residents of all specialties.

In 1985 Col Alvarado was reassigned to the 401st Tactical Fighter Wing Hospital, Torrejon Air Base, Spain, where she served as nurse manager of the medical/surgical unit and level III emergency services. In 1988, she rotated to Robert L. Thompson Regional Hospital, Carswell AFB, Texas, as Officer in Charge, Emergency Department.  Following an Air Force Institute of Technology assignment to complete an advanced degree, the colonel became the Operations Officer, Surgery Flight, 81st Medical Group, Keesler AFB, Miss., the first medical center to implement the Objective Medical Group structure.

Colonel Alvarado pursued an Education with Industry Fellowship in managed care at the George Washington University Health Plan, Bethesda, Maryland.  After completing her fellowship in April 1996, she was named the Action Officer for the Division of Nursing, Office of the Air Force Surgeon General, Bolling AFB, D.C.  In August 1996 she became the Chief Nurse Executive of the 11th Medical Group, Bolling AFB and later assumed command of the 11th Medical Support Squadron. In June 1999, Colonel Alvarado took command of the 17th Medical Group at Goodfellow AFB, Texas.  In July 2002, the colonel became Chair of the Department of Aerospace Education and Training, U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM), Brooks AFB, Texas, and then became Vice Commander of USAFSAM.  In February 2003 she assumed command of USAFSAM, a first for a female/non-physician in the history of the school.

Laura is married to alumnus Eduardo Alvarado, BSN ’78, Major USAF [Ret.].

The honoree for May commencement, also for Professional Achievement, is Antoinette Pollock Mulvaney, BA English 1978.  Toni became a lawyer and then earned a degree in business, and now she is a full professor of business at Lamar University.  More on Toni later.

ALUMNI/AE NETWORKING UP AND RUNNING; UIW, IWHS, SACHS Graduates Welcome

It was a long wait, but an Alumni/ae Networking Network in a new version is up and running.  What started with a network of only three alumni has now grown to over 600 members from IWC, UIW, IWHS and SACHS.

Some of the earlier problems have been corrected.  The new system allows anyone to view the network, but to be on the network you must register.  Those who were on the old network have been carried over, and we have your username and password.  Those new to the network create their own username and password.  Alumni/ae are in control of the entry and all updates.  Passwords can be changed but not the username.  If you want a new username you need to create a new entry and have the administrator delete the old one.  Duplicate entries will be deleted as discovered as this is confusing to those who use the network.  http://www.uiw.edu/alumni/anet/index.htm

Remember please that usernames and passwords should not exceed eight characters.  Less is better.  If you want to communicate with classmates and other alumni put a message in Class Notes.  The network will function best when employment and marketplace fields are completed.  Other fields are helpful so check them all out.  All information provided is voluntary, although an email address is required.  ADCaP and Virtual University alumni, when you are on the network, please look at the education section and make sure the appropriate box is checked.

SPECIAL NOTE:  Registration on the network is NOT automatic.  The entry must first be approved by the administrator to verify alumni/ae status.  This process is done at least once a day, Monday to Friday.  Yes, we have already had some trying to make bogus entries.

Please report any problems to dickm@universe.uiwtx.edu   If an alum email address does not go through it may be an old email address not updated on the network.  If someone contacts you through the network and says they attended or is attending one of the schools, and you want verification, we will be glad to help.

John Goodspeed: S.A. singer is king of Christian country

Express-News Staff Writer

It was sink or swim for Clifton Jansky, the San Antonio singer-songwriter nominated for five awards by the Christian Country Music Association.

Jansky had struck out until there were just a couple of minutes left in the 10th annual awards show at Nashville's historic Ryman Auditorium on Thursday night, when he took the top honor: entertainer of the year. "I just about passed out," he said. "I still feel like I'm on cloud 15-and-a-half or something."

He was the only artist nominated for five awards. The other nominations were for male vocalist, music evangelist, and songwriter and song of the year for "If You Can Hear Me Now." Jansky also performed during the show, broadcast live on the cable network Great American Country. "Singing on the stage of the Ryman Auditorium was my dream since I was a 6-year-old boy," he said.

Jansky was the CCMA's new artist of the year in 2001 and male vocalist of the year in 2002. His single "God's Way" became his fifth No. 1 hit on the Christian charts in June. Before turning to Christian country music, Jansky was a regional country star who recorded "Amarillo by Morning" a couple of years before George Strait made it a national hit in 1983.

Jansky will celebrate his honor with a performance at 12:30 p.m. Nov. 28 during the Gospel Lunch series at the County Line barbecue restaurant on Interstate 10.

 PHONATHONS FOR 2004-2005

image

The new school year is underway, with record enrollments, and the university and the two high schools are beginning the annual Phonathons in support of the Annual Fund for fiscal year 2005.  Gifts received in response to the pre-call letters is well over $30,000, a wonderful start.  We appreciate your continued support, and we hope you will continue to respond to this appeal when a student calls you.   The cost of education in the private sector is always rising despite our careful and prudent use of resources.  The annual fund impacts students directly and they need you more than ever.  Please be as generous as you possibly can.  The university advancement team will be making calls throughout the year and the two high schools will schedule periods of intensive calls by volunteers this fall.   After that our advancement team students will follow up on alumni/ae who could not be reached during this intensified calling period.

This year Patrick Greener is coordinating the efforts of all three Phonathons, and we trust that whatever and whenever you pledge can be completed before the end of the fiscal year on May 31, 2005.

Please remember that this year is the 100th anniversary of St Anthony Catholic High School.  UIW and IWHS will celebrate their 125th anniversary in 2006.

There are those who wake up in the morning and say, "Good morning, Lord,"

Alumni and Planned Giving
December, 2004

AN OPEN LETTER TO ALL ALUMNI AND ALUMNAE OF INCARNATE WORD

I first came to Incarnate Word in September of 1964 and in those forty years I have made transitions from teaching and public relations, teaching and assistant to the president and then teaching and alumni and planned giving.  Over those years I have come to know many, many former students and graduates.  A good number were also my former students.

The time has now come for me to make yet another transition and eventually turn over the day to day operations of the Alumni Office and Planned Giving to new leadership for the future.  I do not plan to leave Incarnate Word, but I would like to make a transition to the care and organization of university archives in the Mabee Library, and to continue to help with special events.  It is my hope that I will be able to make this transition to semi-retired status by June 1, 2005 and still be available to consult with the new leadership as needed.

A search process will begin shortly and I wanted you to hear the news personally from me.

The alumni/ae operations have come a long way since 1964, and this would not have been possible without the continued loyalty and support of our former students all over the world.

I will continue to be in touch with you as this process continues.

God bless.

Sincerely,
Dick McCracken
Dean of Alumni and Planned Giving

Nov. 2004

Dear Friends:

Please join me in thanking Dick McCracken for his four decades of selfless devotion and exemplary service to the Incarnate Word community.  Although Dick may be retiring from his post as Dean of Alumni and Planned Giving, I think we can all be heartened by the fact that he’s not really leaving our community, but rather, redirecting his energies and knowledge to the critical position of caring for the university’s archives in the library.

I’ll always be grateful to Dick for his assistance during the 19 years I have been president of Incarnate Word.  Whenever I’ve needed to know something about the Incarnate Word community, Dick has always been there with a ready answer and steady advice.

Because the university has experienced tremendous enrollment growth in the past few years – we are currently the fifth largest private institution of higher learning in Texas as well as the state’s largest Catholic university – the search for Dick’s successor becomes even more critical as our alumni base continues to rapidly expand.

As such, I’m pleased to announce that Sr. Kathleen Coughlin, Vice-President for Institutional Advancement, will lead a search committee for the next Dean of Alumni and Planned Giving.  It is Sister’s goal to hire the new dean by next spring, so I urge you to contact her should you have any questions or comments on this process.  She can be reached by email at Coughlin@universe.uiwtx.edu or by phone at (210) 829-2749.

In the meantime, let’s all once again extend our thanks and congratulations to a true Incarnate Word original – Dick McCracken.

God Bless,
LJA/vr

"Help us to Re-found the University for the Future" * This concept is an adaptation of the directions of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word at their last General Chapter which urges the members to "re-found the Congregation." This means to recapture the original founding spirit of 1869 which included dedication, a spirit of fearless innovation, Jesus' Gospel values of service and courage, all within the context of faith. For the university, this means an examination of our founding core values as they continue to animate our mission in the 21st century.
