ANNUAL MEMORIAL MASS ON NOVEMBER 14, 2004

You can save the postage and email the names you wish to be remembered at the Mass on November 14th in the Motherhouse Chapel at 11:00 a.m. and throughout the month of November. All alumni, alumnae and friends are invited to participate. This is a slight change from previous years as it is the second Sunday of November which coincides with the regular second Sunday of the month Mass in the Motherhouse Chapel. As is now the custom, the liturgy ends with a procession to the cemetery of the Incarnate Word Sisters for a remembrance with flowers of the deceased CCVIs, followed by a reception in Centennial Hall. Please send the names of alumni, relatives, friends and former teachers to gladysd@universe.uiwtx.edu
ANNUAL LIGHT THE WAY CEREMONY NOVEMBER 20th
For almost two decades the Incarnate Word campuses have become a traditional beacon of the Christmas season with hundreds of thousands of lights delighting thousands of visitors from near and far. The annual LIGHT THE WAY ceremony is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. in the McDermott Convocation Center and after a short ceremony this lights will come on the campuses of UIW, IWHS and SACHS. There will be a procession around the UIW campus to see the lights, ending at Central Market on Broadway for a free reception. HEB is again the major sponsor of Light the Way this year. The lights remain on nightly through January 6, 2005.
ADCaP FALL GATHERING FOR THE FAMILY
Following on the success of last fall’s successful ADCaP alumni gathering in San Antonio, this year the focus will expand to the immediate families of ADCaP alumni. This year’s event will be tied to the ever popular Light the Way Ceremony on Saturday, November 20, 2004 with an opportunity for ADCaP alumni and families, faculty and staff to gather for a social before the tradition ceremony lighting the thousands of lights on the university campus. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Marian Hall Ballroom on campus and then move to the nearby McDermott Convocation Center for the lighting ceremony.
Out of town ADCaP alumni are more than welcome to take part. In order to make preparations, please RSVP to the alumni office at 210-829-6014, 1-800-584-5322, or by email to dickm@universe.uiwtx.edu. It would be a great help if the ADCaP alumni and families would make and wear their own nametags to the event.
UIW NOW LARGEST CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY IN TEXAS
The University of the Incarnate Word is now the fifth largest private university in Texas, according to figures released this week by the association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas (ICUT). UIW started the fall semester with 4,800 students, an 8 percent increase from the previous year. This is the highest enrollment in the 123-year history of the University. Enrollment at UIW has now increased in 18 of the last 19 years. Incarnate Word also has become the largest Catholic university in the state, as well as the largest private Hispanic serving institution according to ICUT.
Recently, Consumer Digest Magazine ranked the University of the Incarnate Word sixth as a “best value” for private universities in Texas. The only other private institution from Texas to rank in the Top 25 was Rice University, which came in at No. 9.“We’re pleased to be in the position of offering a quality education at an affordable price that’s allowing the university to grow,” said Dr. Louis Agnese, Jr.
STACEY JOHNSON NAMED TO SPORTS HALL OF FAME
It's all coming full circle for Stacey Johnson. A former Lee High School student who went on to a standout career at San Jose State, she made the U.S. Olympic team in fencing in 1980. After her athletic career, she remained active in amateur sports administration, founding the Dreams for Youth program in San Antonio. And now, because of her accomplishments, she's going into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame.
Johnson was one of six named to the hall's Class of 2005 at a news conference Tuesday (Oct. 19th) at the Alamodome. Others named were former football player Gabriel Rivera, the late football coach Jim Wacker, former British Open golf champion Bill Rogers, former Paralympic Games medalist Ross Davis and former Olympian and distance running star Reuben Reina. The benefactor of the tribute gala that will honor Johnson and her five fellow inductees on Feb. 10 is the Dreams for Youth program, the same organization Johnson founded 11 years ago.
"It's a closing of the loop," said Johnson, a five-time U.S. national fencing team championship finalist. "Early on people in this community helped me (as an athlete), and now I'm giving back." [San Antonio Express-News, October 20, 2004]
Stacey, who earned her MA in Communication Arts from UIW in 1990, is also the Dean of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at Palo Alto College in San Antonio.
Another alumna in the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame is the late Betty Dodd, IWHS ’49, who was a champion golfer.
BRAINPOWER CONNECTION NEWS
University Preparatory Programs
Daniel I. Ochoa, Dean
The fall term is well under way at both Incarnate Word High School and St. Anthony Catholic High School. Both high schools have reported a successful and extremely smooth start. The summer program was held this year at Incarnate Word High School, and 315 students attended the two June sessions.
Both Incarnate Word High School and St. Anthony Catholic High School are finalizing their respective strategic plans and look forward to implementing programs within the next five years. We would like to recognize Dr. Dan Dominguez and his UIW capstone class students that provided data and insight for each of the high schools during the fall session. We are excited to announce that Sr. Conchessa Johnston has been hired to serve both high schools in the capacity of Mission Effectiveness Director. Sr. Conchessa will split her time between the two high schools to develop programs and assist in carrying out the mission of the Sisters of Charity.
This time of the year always means recruitment, and both high schools are preparing for the tours of prospective students who come from the various Catholic middle schools in San Antonio during the entire month of October. St. Anthony had nine new classrooms added this summer, and the gymnasium is set to receive new seating, air-conditioning, dressing and restroom facilities this fall. Incarnate Word High School had the classrooms painted, new carpets installed, new doors, drop ceilings and lighting added, restrooms renovated, new student plaza, and wireless capabilities added to the entire campus. We have thirty-seven students enrolled in our University/High school Connection Program, and they will be earning dual high school and college credit upon completion of their coursework.
The Brainpower Connection Schools had our first meeting on August 26, and have a full agenda planned for this year. St. Anthony Elementary and St. Peters have also reported an excellent start to the school year, and look forward to the continued networking associated with the University of the Incarnate Word.

ALUMNI/AE NETWORKING UP AND RUNNING
UIW, IWHS, SACHS Graduates Welcome
It was a long wait, but an Alumni/ae Networking Network in a new version is up and running. Hopefully some of the earlier problems have been corrected. The new system allows anyone to view the network, but to be on the network you must register. Those who were on the old network have been carried over, and we have your username and password. Those new to the network create their own username and password. Alumni/ae are in control of the entry and all updates. Passwords can be changed but not the username. If you want a new username you need to create a new entry and have the administrator delete the old one. Duplicate entries will be deleted as discovered, as this is confusing to those who use the network. http://www.uiw.edu/alumni/anet/index.htm
Remember please that usernames and passwords should not exceed eight characters. Less is better. If you want to communicate with classmates and other alumni put a message in Class Notes. The network will function best when employment and marketplace fields are completed. Other fields are helpful so check them all out. All information provided is voluntary, although an email address is required.
SPECIAL NOTE: Registration on the network is NOT automatic. The entry must first be approved by the administrator to verify alumni/ae status. This process is done at least once a day, Monday to Friday. Yes, we have already had some trying to make bogus entries.
So far we have 500 alumni/ae in the network. Please report any problems to dickm@universe.uiwtx.edu If an alum email address does not go through it may be an old email address not updated on the network.

UIW AND NORTHWEST VISTA AWARDED $3 MILLION GRANT
A $3 million cooperative grant has been awarded to the University of the Incarnate Word and Northwest Vista College to strengthen the experience of first-year students at both institutions. The Title V cooperative federal grant, focused grants awarded to Hispanic-serving institutions, is the largest grant in UIW history. Its purpose is to reach out to first-year students at both schools, create better communication and offer more opportunities for them to become engaged members of the university community.
Among the proposed programs will be the development of a course for first-year students that will address topics of significant interest to these students, such as study habits and career planning. An increased number of student-run engagement opportunities will also be developed; programs such as a campus radio station have been discussed. The grant will also fund additional university personnel to work directly with first-year students and assist with the proposed programs. Better communication between students and faculty will be a focus of this project. The program will encourage active and collaborative learning strategies for the classroom.
Many students enter college and are uncertain of the area they are interested in studying. Through the efforts of the program, students will be encouraged to choose a major within their first year. “Students who have chosen a major early in their education make more progress and have more focus,” said Dr. Denise J. Doyle, UIW vice president for academic and student affairs. The grant will provide the services necessary for those attending UIW to become more successful and engaged students.
“We want our students to leave Incarnate Word as successful as they arrived here,” said Dr. Louis Agnese Jr., UIW president. “That is part of the agreement we make with students when they are accepted here, that we will work with them to ensure their success.”
Note: This grant will allow UIW to have a student-run internet radio station in the near future.

SACHS HAS GALA 50th REUNION
The Class of 1954 had 11 present (with 7 spouses) to celebrate their 50th reunion Friday October 15, 2004. They attended the Homecoming Football game on Saturday and finished by having a Mass on Sunday, October 17, 2004. Mass ended with a passionate and emotional Latin rendition of Salve Regina.
Johnny Johnson, Class of 1929 celebrated his 75th reunion and was the senior man for the Homecoming festivities. He also attended Mass on Sunday before returning to Corpus Christi with his daughter Terry Peterson. He will be 93 in March.
The Homecoming Football game was held on Saturday. We had 82 alumni in attendance, most brought spouses and family. Crowd estimates by Express News was 750- the actual gate count was 1,556. The final score was; St. Anthony Yellow Jackets -38, the Sabinal Yellow Jackets -8 Both teams had identical 5-1 records going into the game. St Anthony is now 6-1 and is now ranked first in their division.
Everyone should mark your calendar for March 12, 2005. St. Anthony Catholic High School (SACHS) will have a Black-tie Gala for its 100th Anniversary. The event will be held in the UIW Sky Room and attendance is anticipated to exceed 500 people. SACHS will honor three Oblate priests for their contribution to education and character development. The cost will be $50 per person.

PHONATHONS FOR 2004-2005

The new school year is underway, with record enrollments, and the university and the two high schools are beginning the annual Phonathons in support of the Annual Fund for fiscal year 2005. Gifts received in response to the pre-call letters is well over $30,000, a wonderful start. We appreciate your continued support, and we hope you will continue to respond to this appeal when a student calls you. The cost of education in the private sector is always rising despite our careful and prudent use of resources. The annual fund impacts students directly and they need you more than ever. Please be as generous as you possibly can. The university advancement team will be making calls throughout the year and the two high schools will schedule periods of intensive calls by volunteers this fall. After that our advancement team students will follow up on alumni/ae who could not be reached during this intensified calling period.
This year Patrick Greener is coordinating the efforts of all three Phonathons, and we trust that whatever and whenever you pledge can be completed before the end of the fiscal year on May 31, 2005.
Please remember that this year is the 100th anniversary of St Anthony Catholic High School. UIW and IWHS will celebrate their 125th anniversary in 2006.

THE LIGHTER SIDE
Thanks to alumna Martha Villasana de Baker
A Sunday school teacher was telling her class the story of the Good
Samaritan, in which a man was beaten, robbed and left for dead.
She described the situation in vivid detail so her students
would catch the drama.
Then, she asked the class, "If you saw a person lying on the roadside, all wounded and bleeding, what would you do?"
A thoughtful little girl broke the hushed silence, "I think I'd throw up."

"Help us to Re-found the University for the Future" * This concept is an adaptation of the directions of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word at their last General Chapter which urges the members to "re-found the Congregation." This means to recapture the original founding spirit of 1869 which included dedication, a spirit of fearless innovation, Jesus' Gospel values of service and courage, all within the context of faith. For the university, this means an examination of our founding core values as they continue to animate our mission in the 21st century.
