UIW NAMED A BEST VALUE BY CONSUMER'S DIGEST

The University of the Incarnate Word has been named the sixth best value for private school higher education in the United States, according to Consumer's Digest. UIW is one of only two Texas schools named to the "Best Values for Private Colleges and Universities" list, which evaluates schools based on academic excellence and the cost of attending. With its sixth-place ranking and a value-index score of 94.7, Incarnate Word was the highest-ranked Texas school in both the public and private categories.

The Consumer's Digest rankings began by determining a value-index score, which was derived by factoring academic excellence (standardized test scores, high-school rank and GPA of entering freshmen) with the educational quality offered by each institution (student-to-faculty ratio, graduation rate, percentage of faculty holding terminal degrees). The value-index score and the estimated attendance costs, including tuition, required fees, and average room and board, were then analyzed to determine what schools offered "the most academic value per dollar," according to Consumer's Digest. The rankings do not consider financial aid assistance, which makes the cost of attending Incarnate Word even more accessible. UIW's generous financial aid program awards assistance to more than 80 percent of its students.

UIW was the highest ranked Texas private school, beating Rice University, which was listed at no. 9. In addition, three Texas schools made the Public Colleges List: UT-Austin at no. 36, Texas A&M at no. 44, and UT-Dallas at no. 50.

HURRICANE VICTIMS BENEFIT

ALUMNI LUNCH BUNCH ENJOYS SPECIAL PROGRAM

A huge and special thanks go out to Shirlie Kaats, '56, her husband, Gil, and their whole family for making the luncheon September 13 th at the Old San Francisco Steak House so very special. The theme of saluting those who have served out nation and a remembrance of 9/11 was carried out to the last detail in a powerpoint presentation, displays, and table decorations. Shirlie arranged for a special surprise with a performance by family friend Clifton Jansky, 2002 Christian country music male vocalist of the year.

Shirlie reminded one and all that these annual September gatherings are social only, and to get on the invitation list all you need to do is ask.

UIW No. 1 IN NATIONAL SOCCER POLL

For the first time in its five-plus-year NCAA history, the University of the Incarnate Word has a team ranked number one in a national poll. In the rankings announced today (September 14) by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, the Cardinals men's team climbed to the top spot based on their 3-0-0 record last week and on their perfect 5-0-0 mark for the season. "Being number one has been a goal of ours over the past two years," Coach Dennis Currier said. "It truly is a tribute to all the hard work by our athletes and it's a good feeling to be recognized in this manner because very few teams get to this level."

In the previous poll, UIW was number four. In the final week of September of 2003, Incarnate Word was third in the national listing for its highest ranking ever. UIW finished the 2003 season as the number 10-ranked team. Over the past seven days leading up to the current vote, the Cardinals were overpowering in winning three games against Southwest Soccer Conference opponents. In the three wins, UIW scored 17 goals while allowing just three.

PHONATHONS FOR 2004-2005

image

The new school year is underway, with record enrollments, and the university and the two high schools are beginning the annual Phonathons in support of the Annual Fund for fiscal year 2005. Gifts received in response to the pre-call letters is well over $13,000, a wonderful start. We appreciate your continued support, and we hope you will continue to respond to this appeal when a student calls you. The cost of education in the private sector is always rising despite our careful and prudent use of resources. The annual fund impacts students directly and they need you more than ever. Please be as generous as you possibly can. The university advancement team will be making calls throughout the year and the two high schools will schedule periods of intensive calls by volunteers this fall. After that our advancement team students will follow up on alumni/ae who could not be reached during this intensified calling period.

This year Patrick Greener is coordinating the efforts of all three Phonathons, and we trust that whatever and whenever you pledge can be completed before the end of the fiscal year on May 31, 2005.

Please remember that this year is the 100 th anniversary of St Anthony Catholic High School. UIW and IWHS will celebrate their 125 th anniversary in 2006.

"Help us to Re-found the University for the Future" * This concept is an adaptation of the directions of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word at their last General Chapter which urges the members to "re-found the Congregation." This means to recapture the original founding spirit of 1869 which included dedication, a spirit of fearless innovation, Jesus' Gospel values of service and courage, all within the context of faith. For the university, this means an examination of our founding core values as they continue to animate our mission in the 21st century.
