UIW RECEIVES $! MILLION GRANT FOR PHARMACY PROGRAM
The University of the Incarnate Word received
a $1 million grant from the City of San Antonio's Economic Development
Incentive Fund for its new School of Pharmacy.
"The city's support stands to benefit not just Incarnate Word, but also
all of San Antonio and the surrounding area," Dr. Louis Agnese, Jr. said.
"We're excited by the long-term impact the School of Pharmacy stands to
make in San Antonio in addressing the severe shortage of pharmacists in
our city."
Classes are scheduled to start in the fall of 2006, although students
can enroll in a pre-pharmacy track that begins this fall.
The UIW program will be the only one of its type in San Antonio, and one
of only 88 in the nation. While there are currently four public pharmacy
schools in Texas, the UIW degree will be the only one offered from a university
that is both private and faith-based.
The UIW pharmacy program will also be the only one in the nation where
students can opt to train for a bilingual pharmacy certification in English
and Spanish.
UIW MATH, SCIENCE & ENGINEERING CENTER
Construction Photos - July 2004
Below are photos of the construction taking place on the new, five-story SBC Science Building, which will hold new Biology and Chemistry research and teaching laboratories. All photos look south toward Hildebrand and the existing Science Hall, as taken from the UIW Mabee Library. Once completed the old Science Hall will be completely redone and renamed the Henry Bonilla Science Hall.

THANK YOU AGAIN FOR HELPING TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN!

PHONATHONS FOR 2004-2005

The new school year is underway and the university and the two high schools are preparing for the annual Phonathons in support of the Annual Fund for fiscal year 2005. We appreciate your continued support, and we hope you will continue to respond to this appeal when a student calls you. The cost of education in the private sector is always rising despite our careful and prudent use of resources. The annual fund impacts students directly and they need you more than ever. Please be as generous as you possibly can. The university advancement team will be making calls throughout the year and the two high schools will schedule periods of intensive calls by volunteers this fall. After that our advancement team students will follow up on alumni/ae who could not be reached during this intensified calling period.
This year Patrick Greener is coordinating the efforts of all three Phonathons, and we trust that whatever and whenever you pledge can be completed before the end of the fiscal year on May 31, 2005.
Please remember that this year is the 100 th anniversary of St Anthony Catholic High School. UIW and IWHS will celebrate their 125 th anniversary in 2006.

There is a two-letter word that perhaps has
more meaning than any other two-letter word, and that is "UP."
It's easy to understand UP
, meaning toward the sky or at the
top of the list, but when we waken in the morning, why do we wake UP
?
At a meeting, why does a topic come UP
? Why do we speak UP
and why are the officers UP
for election and why is it UP
to the secretary to write UP
a report?
We call UP
our friends And we use it to brighten UP
a room, polish UP
the silver, we warm UP
the leftovers and clean UP
the kitchen. We lock UP
the house and some guys fix UP
the old car.
At other times the little word has real special meaning. People stir UP
trouble, line UP
for tickets, work UP
an appetite, and think UP
excuses.
To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP
is special.
And this UP
is confusing:
A drain must be opened UP
because it is stopped UP .
We open UP
a store in the morning but we close it UP
at night.
We seem to be pretty mixed UP
about UP !
To be knowledgeable of the proper uses of UP
, look UP
the word in the dictionary. In
a desk size dictionary, takes UP
almost 1/4 the page and definitions add UP
to about thirty.
If you are UP
to it, you might try building UP
a list of the many ways UP
is used. It will take UP
a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP
, you may wind UP
with a hundred or more.
When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP
. When the sun comes out we say
it is clearing UP .
When it rains, it wets UP
the earth. When it doesn't rain for a while, things dry UP
.
One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP
,
for now my time is UP ,
so.............
I'll shut UP .....!

"Help us to Re-found the University for the Future" * This concept is an adaptation of the directions of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word at their last General Chapter which urges the members to "re-found the Congregation." This means to recapture the original founding spirit of 1869 which included dedication, a spirit of fearless innovation, Jesus' Gospel values of service and courage, all within the context of faith. For the university, this means an examination of our founding core values as they continue to animate our mission in the 21st century.
