CHECK OUT THE UIW ALUMNI NETWORK www.uiw.edu/alumni/anet/  - Alumni are joining the network all the time. In the coming weeks our network will be updated to make it more user friendly and of greater service. Our alumni and alumnae will be able to add and update their own entries, once we have verified your status with us, and you have your own unique user code. This should speed up the process. In the meantime the old network will be up and running, and we will hold new entries until the transformation is complete.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MISS HALLIGAN!

imageMany alumnae and alumni since the 1950s have known Maureen Halligan as an actress, teacher, mentor or friend---or all four.

I can safely say [since she does not have a computer], that our dear Professor Emerita of Theatre has a significant birthday on May 6th.

Miss Halligan remembers everything---every show, every student, every production with incredible and scary accuracy. She is still very much active with the UIW Extended Run Players established by Sister Germaine Corbin, CCVI. I am sure she would love to hear from her former students and fans in the audiences, many going back to the 1950s when The Dublin Players, with herself and late husband Ronnie Ibbs, performed on the campus. If you wish to send birthday greetings to her you can send them in care of the Alumni Office and we will put them all together for her. Happy Birthday, Ms. Halligan, and many more.

If so, did you know you can nominate one prospective freshman or transfer student every year to receive the McCracken Alumni Referral Scholarship [M.A.R.S.]?

This is a one-time $1,000 scholarship for first-time freshmen and transfer students admitted to UIW. Sorry, it can't be awarded to current students.

Simply email the Alumni Office dickm@universe.uiwtx.edu and we will make certain the Office of Admissions sends you an information packet,

We receive $1,000 or more a quarter from this program, all designated for the Faculty Development Endowment. For the last quarter it was $1,400.

2004 PHONATHON; UIW OVER $100,000

image  image

Once again all alumni are receiving a call from students [or an email] in support of pledges to the 2003-2004 Annual Fund, although you don't need to wait for us to call you. The annual fund is, in general, unrestricted donations in support of operations for the year on the various campuses. In practice, the annual funds provided by alumni/ae offer direct student assistance. These funds are vital to our students, and we hope you will be as generous as possible. So far, UIW is over $100,000 in pledges, St Anthony has exceeded last year's goal, and IWHS is still in progress. If you wish to pledge to the Phonathon you may email dickm@universe.uiwtx.edu for the University, IWHS@universe.uiwtx.edu for Incarnate Word High School, and greener@universe.uiwtx.edu for SACHS. Gifts can also be made online at www.uiw.edu/giving/

"Help us to Re-found the University for the Future" * This concept is an adaptation of the directions of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word at their last General Chapter which urges the members to "re-found the Congregation." This means to recapture the original founding spirit of 1869 which included dedication, a spirit of fearless innovation, Jesus' Gospel values of service and courage, all within the context of faith. For the university, this means an examination of our founding core values as they continue to animate our mission in the 21 st century.

A SMILE AMID SORROW

Alumna Sue Fruchnicht Bean of the IWC Class of 197 lost her husband to a murderer nine years ago, and just last February her son, Jacob, died in his sleep at age 30. Sue's daughter was expecting the birth of a son in March, and the decision was to name him Jacob. And here he is. Worthy of a smile, we think.
