HOMECOMING AND REUNIONS

Mark your calendars and watch for more email and regular mail as there will be various Homecoming and Reunion events for university alumni/ae from April 16 to 19 th , including the spectacular annual Fiesta Fashion Show [if you are able to get tickets to this]. Remember that this year reunions will be by decades rather than specific years, although this does not rule out a class celebrating a special anniversary. Hopefully this will eradicate the myth that homecoming and reunions are only for certain years. And also for the future, while we will always have a Homecoming celebration or celebrations during the year, formal decade reunions will be every other year after 2004. And so, the next big reunion year, wonder of wonders, will be for the University's 125 anniversary year, also known as a quasquicentennial [1881-2006].

UIW MASCOT INPUT

This communication was designed for the alumni of UIW and I am passing on the information at the request of a university task force. I would ask UIW alumni to share this information with others who may not, at this time, be on our email list. The task force would appreciate as much input as possible.

The following, however, may also be of interest to other members of the Incarnate Word email community. If the form on the link provided is not suitable for you I will be happy to direct any comments/suggestions to members of the task force listed at the end of the second link.

Dick McCracken, Dean of Alumni

This is a link that directs you to the online entry form to suggest a new mascot name for UIW. The University Planning Commission-sanctioned Task Force is encouraging as much community-wide input as possible. The next link is to the full report.

2004 PHONATHON; UIW OVER $100,000

image  image

Once again all alumni are receiving a call from students [or an email] in support of pledges to the 2003-2004 Annual Fund, although you don't need to wait for us to call you. The annual fund is, in general, unrestricted donations in support of operations for the year on the various campuses. In practice, the annual funds provided by alumni/ae offer direct student assistance. These funds are vital to our students, and we hope you will be as generous as possible. So far, UIW is over $100,000 in pledges, St Anthony has exceeded last year's goal, and IWHS is still in progress. If you wish to pledge to the Phonathon you may email dickm@universe.uiwtx.edu for the University, IWHS@universe.uiwtx.edu for Incarnate Word High School, and greener@universe.uiwtx.edu for SACHS. Gifts can also be made online at http://www.uiw.edu/giving/giv_index.html

"Help us to Re-found the University for the Future" * This concept is an adaptation of the directions of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word at their last General Chapter which urges the members to "re-found the Congregation." This means to recapture the original founding spirit of 1869 which included dedication, a spirit of fearless innovation, Jesus' Gospel values of service and courage, all within the context of faith. For the university, this means an examination of our founding core values as they continue to animate our mission in the 21 st century.

And since this is IRS month, this came from an Incarnate Word friend in Pennsylvania:

THE DONATION

Father O'Malley answers the phone.

"Hello, is this Father O'Malley?"      "It is."

"This is the IRS. Can you help us?"      "I can."

"Do you know a Ted Houlihan?"      "I do"

"Is he a member of your congregation?"      "He is."

"Did he donate $10,000 to the church?"      "He will!"
