ALUMNI RECEPTION TO CELEBRATE CORPUS CHRISTI ADCaP /VU ALUMNI
A
first-ever reunion of alumni of the Corpus Christi ADCaP and Virtual University
programs, faculty and staff will be held on March 10, 2004 at 7 p.m. and
hosted at the home of Mr and Mrs Joseph Mueller [UIW trustee Patty Mueller],
39 Hewitt Drive, Corpus Christi. All Corpus Christi area alumni are also
cordially invited to the party and meet the ADCaP graduates who attended
their classes on the campus of Del Mar College. Virtual University graduates,
of course, did course work online. Admission is free but please RSVP to
the Alumni Office.
HOMECOMING AND REUNIONS
Mark your calendars and watch for more email and regular mail as there will be various Homecoming and Reunion events for university alumni/ae from April 16 to 19 th , including the spectacular annual Fiesta Fashion Show [if you are able to get tickets to this]. Remember that this year reunions will be by decades rather than specific years, although this does not rule out a class celebrating a special anniversary. Hopefully this will eradicate the myth that homecoming and reunions are only for certain years. And also for the future, while we will always have a Homecoming celebration or celebrations during the year, formal decade reunions will be every other year after 2004. And so, the next big reunion year, wonder of wonders, will be for the University's 125 anniversary year, also known as a quasquicentennial [1881-2006].

PEACE POLE DEDICATION TO ALUMNA ADA KOENIG KIRK
Join us dedicating a Peace Pole.*

Over 200,000 monuments with the words "May Peace Prevail on Earth" stand in over 180 countries.
Sunday, March 28, 12 noon
University of the Incarnate Word
Brackenridge Villa Lawn
The Peace Pole will be on the lawn of the historic home of Eleanor Brackenridge, "Mother of Women's Suffrage in Texas." She wrote on legal rights for women and knew that the foundation of peace is justice. She gathered suffragettes in her home.
An oak tree and the Peace Pole will be in memory of Ada Koenig Kirk (1923-2003, BA from Incarnate Word in 1943, MA in 1965), an educator, community leader, and creator of peace who organized over a hundred students and citizens in the first Peace Pole ceremony in rural south Texas in Cuero, May 13, 1998 (pictured above).
Schools, groups, and individuals are invited to do "peace art, music, and projects" for the celebration. Make and bring pages for the "God Weeps" mural. See www.salsa.net/peace/godweeps/ For more information contact Ada's daughter, Sister Martha Ann Kirk, University of the Incarnate Word, 829-3854, kirk@universe.uiwtx.edu This monument will be in English, Spanish, French, German, Arabic, Hebrew, Vietnamese, and Swahili.

#2. As some of you may know, I am now President of the Harp & Shamrock Society, the Irish Society that my Dad founded back in the 1960's. Every year we put on the St. Patrick's Day Parade. We are in desperate need of convertibles to be in our Parade. If any of you know of anyone that would either, let us borrow one or would like to drive it in our Parade, please let me know. It's really a lot of fun. I used to have a 1977 VW convertible, as many of you may remember and we always had it entered in the Parade. Josh Davis (The Olympic swimmer) is our Grand Marshall of the parade this year and we really need some convertibles to drive some people in the Parade. Home # 699-1362 or eiandwayne@aol.com Thanks.

We receive nearly $1,000 a quarter from this program, all designated for the Faculty Development Endowment.

2004 PHONATHON

Once again all alumni are receiving a call from students [or an email] in support of pledges to the 2003-2004 Annual Fund, although you don't need to wait for us to call you. The annual fund is, in general, unrestricted donations in support of operations for the year on the various campuses. In practice, the annual funds provided by alumni/ae offer direct student assistance. These funds are vital to our students, and we hope you will be as generous as possible. So far, UIW is over $80,000 in pledges, St Anthony has exceeded last year's goal, and IWHS is still in progress. If you wish to pledge to the Phonathon you may email dickm@universe.uiwtx.edu for the University, IWHS@universe.uiwtx.edu for Incarnate Word High School, and greener@universe.uiwtx.edu for SACHS. Gifts can also be made online at http://www.uiw.edu/giving/giv_index.html
Photos by alumnus Don Ewers capturing the arrival home from Iraq on February 22 and meeting his wife, Angel, and son, David. Alumnae Mom and sister, Lorraine and Theresa, are not far away. Praise God.

From nursing alumna Maxine Burns of Sacramento, CA:
The famous Olympic skier Picabo Street(pronounced Peek-A-Boo) is not just an athlete; she is a nurse currently working at the Intensive Care Unit of a large metropolitan hospital. She is not permitted to answer the telephone, however, as it caused simply too much confusion when she would answer the phone and say, Picabo, ICU

"Help us to Re-found the University for the Future"
* This concept is an adaptation of the directions of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word at their last General Chapter which urges the members to "re-found the Congregation." This means to recapture the original founding spirit of 1869 which included dedication, a spirit of fearless innovation, Jesus' Gospel values of service and courage, all within the context of faith. For the university, this means an examination of our founding core values as they continue to animate our mission in the 21st century.
