Reflections on a Lifetime in Catholic Education
DECEMBER COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS BY DR. BERNADETTE
O'CONNOR

INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS HONOR CHURCH LEADERS
The University of the Incarnate Word
will name two scholarships in honor of two Catholic leaders that have
shaped the lives of many across the world. The two new scholarships will
be the Pope John Paul II International Scholarship and the Mother Teresa
International Memorial Scholarship. The scholarships will be awarded to
deserving international students based on academic merit, financial need
and application requirements.
"These two Catholic world leaders were chosen because they reflect through
their commitment of global service the value espoused in the mission of
the University of the Incarnate Word. Their work in the advancement of
social justice and promotion of human dignity provides an example for
all human kind regardless of national, religious or socioeconomic background,"
said Dr. David Jurenovich, vice president for administration at UIW.
This year marks the 25th Anniversary of John Paul II's papacy, and is a fitting tribute to his years of Christian service and leadership. The second scholarship was named after Mother Teresa for the countless contributions that she made in her work serving the poorest of the poor and her consistent efforts to elevate the human condition, highlighting the true importance and value of peace in the world. Mother Teresa, like many of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, UIW's founding congregation, have attempted to serve the people worldwide, selflessly.
THE BROWN BAG CHALLENGER
Students and alumni from the University
of the Incarnate Word ADCaP Program at participated in bagging over 150
brown gift bags for the homeless and gathering toys for the less fortunate
children of Corpus Christi last December 21st. Each bag contained a new
pair of socks, tooth brushes, fruit, shampoo, soap, first aid kits, information
sheets of community resources from the United Way, cookies, hand-made
candy gift baggets, drinks, Christmas cards from the students of Kostoryz
Elementary school, peanuts, raisins, and other treats. Nice job, Corpus.
Happy New Year.

IWHS 1958 RING FOUND
Someone found an Incarnate Word High
School ring on an airplane, the year is 1958 and the inside initials are
VBL. Any ideas about the owner?
INTERESTED IN ALUMNI/AE INVOLVEMENT?
The UIW Alumni Office is looking for
nominations or volunteers for a core group to study the formation of an
official Alumni Organization to assist the university in carrying the
mission forward, and playing a dynamic role in the future direction of
alumni activities and events. A meeting will be scheduled in September
for those interested or nominated. Send your nominations or your own name
to gladysd@universe.uiwtx.edu

2004 PHONATHON

Once again all alumni are receiving a call from students [or an email] this fall in support of pledges to the 2003-2004 Annual Fund, although you don't need to wait for us to call you. The annual fund is, in general, unrestricted donations in support of operations for the year on the various campuses. In practice, the annual funds provided by alumni/ae offer direct student assistance. These funds are vital to our students, and we hope you will be as generous as possible. So far, UIW is up to $80,000 in pledges, St Anthony has exceeded last year's goal, and IWHS is still in progress. If you wish to pledge prior to the Phonathon you may email dickm@universe.uiwtx.edu for the University, IWHS@universe.uiwtx.edu for Incarnate Word High School, and greener@universe.uiwtx.edu for SACHS. Gifts can also be made online at http://www.uiw.edu/giving/giv_index.html
DON'T FORGET!
Alumni
and alumnae should start to think about incoming students for the fall
of 2004 they would like to nominate for a MARS alumni referral scholarship
of $1,000. Check it out at: http://www.uiw.edu/alumni/mars.html

"Help us to Re-found the University for the Future"
* This concept is an adaptation of the directions of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word at their last General Chapter which urges the members to "re-found the Congregation." This means to recapture the original founding spirit of 1869 which included dedication, a spirit of fearless innovation, Jesus' Gospel values of service and courage, all within the context of faith. For the university, this means an examination of our founding core values as they continue to animate our mission in the 21st century.
