FIRST ADCaP REUNION A SUCCESS
Find some people you know!

Well over 140 alumni of the Adult Degree Completion Program at UIW mingled in the new Sky Room on November 6 th and visited with faculty and former classmates. In less than ten years the evening-only program has produced well over 1,000 graduates and 964 students are in attendance in any one 8-week accelerated semester. Look for more reunions in the future, and one just like it in Corpus Christi in the new year.

SACHS FACULTY MEMBER HONORED
The faculty at St. Anthony Catholic High School has something to celebrate as Health teacher and track coach, John G. Gonzales was awarded the Outstanding Leader in Catholic Education Award for faculty. "I feel honored beyond belief; it's been 31 years of work and my peers thought I deserved it. I'm overwhelmed with it, " said Gonzales, who added that he hopes to be in Catholic education for many more years, the good Lord willing. Gonzales has been working at St. Anthony for 29 years and has won the respect of students, parents and faculty alike, for his dedication to the school and its programs. During his entire career at St. Anthony- that began in 1964 when he entered St. Anthony as a student- he has proved to be a friend, colleague and supporter of the school through good times and bad.
"I can not think of an individual more deserving for this award and we are very proud of his past, present and future accomplishments," said St. Anthony Principal, Daniel Ochoa. Criteria for the award includes at least five years of direct involvement and active commitment to Catholic education through leadership and service to the school, parish and greater church.
INTERESTED IN ALUMNI/AE INVOLVEMENT?
The UIW Alumni Office is looking for nominations or volunteers for a core group to study the formation of an official Alumni Organization to assist the university in carrying the mission forward, and playing a dynamic role in the future direction of alumni activities and events. A meeting will be scheduled in September for those interested or nominated. Send your nominations or your own name to gladysd@universe.uiwtx.edu

2004 PHONATHON

Once again all alumni are receiving a call from students [or an email] this fall in support of pledges to the 2003-2004 Annual Fund, although you don't need to wait for us to call you. The annual fund is, in general, unrestricted donations in support of operations for the year on the various campuses. In practice, the annual funds provided by alumni/ae offer direct student assistance. These funds are vital to our students, and we hope you will be as generous as possible. So far, UIW is up to $80,000 in pledges, St Anthony has exceeded last year's goal, and IWHS is still in progress. If you wish to pledge prior to the Phonathon you may email dickm@universe.uiwtx.edu for the University, IWHS@universe.uiwtx.edu for Incarnate Word High School, and greener@universe.uiwtx.edu for SACHS. Gifts can also be made online at http://www.uiw.edu/giving/giv_index.html

ALUMNI GIVING BACK NETWORK PROPOSED
Alumnus Michael T. Berger, MBA '97 and two other alumni have proposed an idea which is, at the core, 'what is good for our business can be good for UIW.' Michael is in real estate with King Realtors; Ray Chacon, BA '99, MBA '00 is a financial planner; and Edward Leos, BA '93 is the CEO of Destination Marketing Group [public relations, web design, etc.] What they propose is that if alumni and friends use the services of the alumni in the network they will donate a percentage of their commission to the university for operations, capital or endowment needs. Eventually the network would have a directory of participating alumni.
Alumni interested in joining the network to provide services within this framework should contact me, and I will pass the information on to the organizing alumni team. dickm@universe.uiwtx.edu
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY 2004!
Dick McCracken, Dean of Alumni and Planned Giving dickm@universe.uiwtx.edu
"Help us to Re-found the University for the Future" * This concept is an adaptation of the directions of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word at their last General Chapter which urges the members to "re-found the Congregation." This means to recapture the original founding spirit of 1869 which included dedication, a spirit of fearless innovation, Jesus' Gospel values of service and courage, all within the context of faith. For the university, this means an examination of our founding core values as they continue to animate our mission in the 21 st century.
