Each November on the first Sunday of the month the University remembers the deceased alumni, faculty and friends of the members of the high school and university communities. The deceased are remembered at Masses throughout the month of November, and in a special way at the liturgy on Sunday, November 2, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. in the Motherhouse Chapel. All are welcome. The liturgy concludes in the CCVI cemetery for a moving remembrance of all the deceased Incarnate Word Sisters. A reception follows in Centennial Hall.
The names of deceased loved ones to be remembered should be sent to dickm@universe.uiwtx.edu
LIGHT THE WAY AND ALUMNI RING BLESSING
Light the Way is now a well established tradition on the Saturday night before Thanksgiving as all three campuses turn on their holiday lights and glow through the season until January 6, 2004. Each year hundreds of alumni and their families come to the UIW campus for the ceremony and a first look at the annual lighting, plus the wonderful reception after the festivities at Central Market HEB on Broadway.
This year we would like to try to re-introduce yet another Incarnate Word tradition, the blessing of senior rings. If you have an IWC, UIW, IWHS or St Anthony ring you would like blessed, come to the liturgy at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 22, in Our Lady's Chapel of the UIW Administration Building and rings will be blessed. A reception follows in Marian Hall and then special reserved seating for alumni and families at the Light the Way ceremony will be held until 7:15 p.m. in the McDermott Convocation Center.
ALUMNI GIVING BACK NETWORK PROPOSED
Alumnus Michael T. Berger, MBA '97 and two other alumni have proposed an idea which is, at the core, 'what is good for our business can be good for UIW.' Michael is in real estate with King Realtors; Ray Chacon, BA '99, MBA '00 is a financial planner; and Edward Leos, BA '93 is the CEO of Destination Marketing Group [public relations, web design, etc.] What they propose is that if alumni and friends use the services of the alumni in the network they will donate a percentage of their commission to the university for operations, capital or endowment needs. Eventually the network would have a directory of participating alumni.
Alumni interested in joining the network to provide services within this framework should contact me, and I will pass the information on to the organizing alumni team. dickm@universe.uiwtx.edu
KENNEDY FOUNDATION AWARDS ST ANTHONY'S TECH GRANT
St. Anthony Catholic High School received news that it would be awarded a $37,000 grant from the John G. and Marie Stella Kenedy Memorial Foundation. The grant will be utilized to purchase electronic visual and interactive teaching aids that will help prepare students to become better at research and problem solving. The equipment will be used in math, English, language, social sciences, religion and science classrooms.
"We're extremely excited that the foundation is helping to fund cutting edge technology for our students because it will improve the quality of the education that they already receive at St. Anthony," said Daniel Ochoa, principal . In March 2000, the Kenedy Foundation provided St. Anthony a grant for computer technology, propelling it into the 21st Century and allowing students to explore new and challenging frontiers.
ADCaPers COME FULL CIRCLE
Monica Navarez Ramirez, BSN ADCaP, '01, IWHS '88, MSN student and Leonard Leos, BSN ADCaP '02, MSN '03, St Anthony HS '77 have come full circle through the two Brainpower schools, the ADCaP evening program, and last fall both joined the UIW nursing faculty.
INTERESTED IN ALUMNI/AE INVOLVEMENT?
The UIW Alumni Office is looking for nominations or volunteers for a core group to study the formation of an official Alumni Organization to assist the university in carrying the mission forward, and playing a dynamic role in the future direction of alumni activities and events. A meeting will be scheduled in September for those interested or nominated. Send your nominations or your own name to gladysd@universe.uiwtx.edu

2004 PHONATHON

Once again all alumni will be receiving a call from students beginning this fall in support of pledges to the 2003-2004 Annual Fund, although you don't need to wait for us to call you. The annual fund is, in general, unrestricted donations in support of operations for the year on the various campuses. In practice, the annual funds provided by alumni/ae offer direct student assistance. These funds are vital to our students, and we hope you will be as generous as possible. So far, UIW is up to $72,000 in pledges, St Anthony has exceeded last year's goal, and IWHS is still in progress. If you wish to pledge prior to the Phonathon you may email dickm@universe.uiwtx.edu for the University, IWHS@universe.uiwtx.edu for Incarnate Word High School, and greener@universe.uiwtx.edu for St Anthony High School. Gifts can also be made online at http://www.uiw.edu/giving/giv_index.html

With thanks to UIW student Yolanda Rodriguez:
Most of us have now learned to live with voice mail as a necessary part of our lives. Have you ever wondered what it would be like if God decided to install voice mail? Imagine praying and hearing the following:
Thank you for calling heaven.
For English press 1
For Spanish press 2
For all other languages, press 3Please select one of the following options:
Press 1 for request
Press 2 for thanksgiving
Press 3 for complaints
Press 4 for all othersI am sorry, all our Angels and Saints are busy helping other sinners right now. However, your prayer is important to us and we will answer it in the order it was received. Please stay on the line.
For answers to nagging questions about dinosaurs, and life on other planets, please wait until you arrive in heaven for the specifics.
Our computers show that you have already been prayed for today, please hang up and call again tomorrow. The office is now closed for the weekend to observe a religious holiday.
If you are calling after hours and need emergency assistance, please contact your local pastor.
Thank you and have a heavenly day.

"Help us to Re-found the University for the Future" * This concept is an adaptation of the directions of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word at their last General Chapter which urges the members to "re-found the Congregation." This means to recapture the original founding spirit of 1869 which included dedication, a spirit of fearless innovation, Jesus' Gospel values of service and courage, all within the context of faith. For the university, this means an examination of our founding core values as they continue to animate our mission in the 21 st century.
