A MINUTE OF YOUR TIME, PLEASE

The following is a link to a short poll of only eleven items to complete and click back to me. It is designed primarily for IWC/UIW alumni but we value all opinions, even “no opinion,” and a few may have general interest to the newsletter readership. Please look it over and we’ll share the results next month.

FUN FOR HERITAGE DAY

October 15th is Heritage Day once again on campus, a time to remember the past and celebrate the present and future. And it is a time to share. Language and culture change over time, and if you don’t believe it,

pretend that a great grandparent was able to come back for a one-day visit. What experiences and language would you need to explain to them? I did this in class once and the list included “nuke the leftovers” and “let’s fly up to Dallas.” Using your generation as a baseline, what would a freshman of 2003 visiting your campus find mysterious? Send your responses to me and I’ll share them on campus on October 15th.

IT ISN'T OVER UNTIL IT IS OVER!

imageThe University of the Incarnate Word held a groundbreaking ceremony for the its Math, Science and Engineering complex at 10 a.m. on May 14.

When completed, the building will be an addition to the university's existing science facility, which was originally constructed in 1950 and occupies an area of 41,379 sq. ft. The new building will have four levels and provide an additional 36,000 sq. ft. of space adjacent to the existing facility.

The complex will house the latest technology and provide space for teaching and research labs for Chemistry and Biology. The project will include two phases; the second will include a $3.5 million renovation to the existing building.

McChesney Architects, a local firm that has developed a majority of the building projects at the university over the last 15 years, will construct the new facility. The building and renovation projects will cost $14 million, and are slated for completion in 2006. The ceremony included a blessing by Archbishop Patrick Flores and the singing of the National Anthem by Tejano singer Patsy Torres.

Gifts are still needed for this campaign and special opportunities exist for naming chairs in the new building

in honor or in memory of someone. To see more details go to: http://www.uiw.edu/scienceprop.html

imageimage

Once again all alumni will be receiving a call from students beginning this fall in support of pledges to the 2003-2004 Annual Fund, although you don't need to wait for us to call you. The annual fund is, in general, unrestricted donations in support of operations for the year on the various campuses. In practice, the annual funds provided by alumni/ae offer direct student assistance. These funds are vital to our students, and we hope you will be as generous as possible. If you wish to pledge prior to the Phonathon you may email dickm@universe.uiwtx.edu for the University, IWHS@universe.uiwtx.edu for Incarnate Word High School, and greener@universe.uiwtx.edu for St Anthony High School. Gifts can also be made online at http://www.uiw.edu/giving/giv_index.html

This year Patrick Greener will be the Coordinator of Phonathons in addition to his development work with St Anthony Catholic High School.

A FAVORITE QUOTEtext

From Margaret Nottigham Fuchs, class of 1938:

"When I came to Incarnate Word I was like a dog on a chain with a kink in it. I couldn't reach the water bowl. Incarnate Word took the kink out, and I have been able to reach everything ever since."

Dick McCracken, Dean of Alumni and Planned Giving dickm@universe.uiwtx.edu

"Help us to Re-found the University for the Future" * This concept is an adaptation of the directions of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word at their last General Chapter which urges the members to "re-found the Congregation." This means to recapture the original founding spirit of 1869 which included dedication, a spirit of fearless innovation, Jesus' Gospel values of service and courage, all within the context of faith. For the university, this means an examination of our founding core values as they continue to animate our mission in the 21 st century.
