A message from the President

"I want to take this opportunity to tell you about a very special event in August - the official grand opening ceremonies of Centro Internacional Universitatrio (CIU) Miguel Angel-Incarnate Word in Mexico City. This is our joint academic venture with the Province of Mexico to develop an affiliate that offers Incarnate Word degrees. Sr. Luz Romay will serve as the CIU General Director.

A number of dignitaries from Mexico and the United States will be present at what promises to be an exciting day of festivities starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16. Additionally, delegations from the Free Trade Alliance of San Antonio and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will join us in Mexico City as we celebrate the launch of our second international venture (after the opening of China Incarnate Word in 2000).

Please keep us in your thoughts as we celebrate yet another milestone in the history of Incarnate Word. Take care and God Bless."

IWHS ALUMNA COMES HOME AFTER 24 YEARS

By alumna Kristy Navaira

After 24 years of being away from Mount Erin hill, shamrock green and sisterhood, Cindy Salinas is ready to put her academic knowledge into play as the new Incarnate Word High School principal.

"I am very excited to be coming back home and look forward to continuing the development of academic excellence and tradition," said Salinas.

Salinas, an Incarnate Word High School graduate of 1979, has been appointed as the principal of the nearly 600 all-girls high school. Salinas was previously the principal of St. Matthews Catholic School and was with Northside Independent School District for over sixteen years. She brings a background of experiences from many different levels.

Salinas graduated from UTSA with a Bachelor in Elementary and Secondary Education, and continued to pursue her Master's in Educational Psychology, also obtaining her certification in Mid Management. Cindy has been married to her high school sweetheart for 17 years and has three beautiful children.

2003 SWEEPSTAKES WINNERS

Here are the winners of the drawing on July 4, 2003. http://www.uiw.edu/alumni/sweepstakes2003.html

The By the Dawn's Early Light party on campus July 4 th was a big success, and the rain waited until everyone was well fed and left for home. There is a good representation of the Incarnate Word family in the winners of Sweepstakes 2003 and many thanks to all who took part and guaranteed Brainpower Scholarships for another school year. And the scholarship is richer by almost $7,000.

MICKEY AGNESE RECEIVES INSIGNE VERBUM AWARD

image

Mickey Agnese with Dr Lou Agnese and Trustee Fully Klingman.

Since 1985 Mickey Agnese has been the First Lady of Incarnate Word. But unlike the first ladies of Washington, the job and the title continue after eight years. First Lady of UIW includes wife, mother, daughter, hostess, scheduler, tour leader, driver, shopper and other duties as assigned. Add to that a life as a volunteer, board member and community resource person. A tall order? Indeed, but Michaeline Huston Agnese has been up to the task 24/7.

So much so that at their March 7, 2003 meeting the University Board of Trustees unanimously voted to award her the university's Insigne Verbum Award [trans. In the sign of the Word], an award reserved for those whose life reflects the mission of the institution and the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word. Miraculously kept secret for months from both Dr and Mrs Agnese, the distinctive award was finally presented to her in June by Trustees chairman Ruth Eilene Sullivan at the annual dinner for the Board of Trustees and the Development Board, held this year in the new Sky Room on campus.

Like each recipient, each award is also one of a kind. A handsome porcelain and gold version of the Incarnate Word steeple logo is handcrafted by artist Nancy Pawel, and assembled on campus in a frame designed and constructed by Steve Heying, Director of Facilities Management, who has also been a member of the campus community since the late 1980's.

Mickey, a native of New Mexico, met Lou, a native of Brooklyn, NY, during their college days. Their active academic and married life together has included time at Gannon University in Pennsylvania, and then Sioux City, Iowa where Lou was named Vice President of Student Affairs at Briarcliff College, a Franciscan institution.

When Lou was named one of the youngest college presidents in the nation in 1985, she became one of the youngest first ladies. Louis III was about to enter grade school at the time, and Nancy was still pre-school. May of this year was busy for the first couple with the normal end of the semester schedule at UIW, plus both children were honor graduates themselves, Louis III from the UT Law School and Nancy from Texas A&M where she will continue in the School of Veterinary Medicine.

Mickey's daily schedule for nearly two decades has included the traditional role of wife and mother, plus official hostess. In addition she made the time to serve on numerous San Antonio committees and boards, including the San Antonio Zoological Society, and volunteer work for Visitation House, Sisters Care, and other CCVI missions.

Does all this sound like a hardworking UIW employee? Indeed. Except for the paycheck.

ADCaP GOES OVER 1,000 GRADUATES

A remarkable achievement for a program initiated in 1996, the Adult Degree Completion Program went over the 1,000 mark in graduates this year. These UIW alumni worked full-time while finishing up their degrees on one of the San Antonio campuses or in Corpus Christi, many while also handling family responsibilities. Here is a link to our ADCaP alumni as of May, 2003. http://www.uiw.edu/alumni/adcapgrand.htm

2003 PHONATHON

imageimage

By the end of May the UIW alumni Phonathon was at the $115, 344 mark in gifts and pledges. The advancement team callers completed the process in early May. Mail and email appeals were sent to alumni unable to be reached by telephone. Now the Phonathon starts gearing up for the 2004 fiscal year.

And finally, with thanks to UIW friend Sandra Meyer of New Orleans:

I've learned....
That we should be glad God doesn't give us everything we ask for.

I've learned....
That money doesn't buy class.

I've learned....
That it's those small daily happenings that make life so spectacular.

I've learned....
That the Lord didn't do it all in one day. What makes me think I can?

I've learned....
That to ignore the facts does not change the facts.

I've learned....
That when you plan to get even with someone, you are only letting that person continue to hurt you.

I've learned....
That love, not time, heals all wounds.

I've learned....
That everyone you meet deserves to be greeted with a smile.

I've learned....
That no one is perfect until you fall in love with them.

I've learned....
That life is tough, but I'm tougher.

I've learned....
That opportunities are never lost; someone will take the ones you miss.

I've learned....
That when you harbor bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.

I've learned....
That one should keep his words both soft and tender, because tomorrow he may have to eat them.

I've learned....
That a smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks.

I've learned....
That I can't choose how I feel, but I can choose what I do about it.

I've learned ...
That it is best to give advice in only two circumstances; when it is requested and when it is a life threatening situation.

I've learned....
That the less time I have to work with, the more things I get done.
