“Help us to Re-found the University for the Future”

MEMORIAL MASS
The annual Memorial Mass for deceased alumni, faculty, family and friends is in the Motherhouse Chapel at 10:30 a.m. on November 3rd. At the end of the liturgy there will be a remembrance of the deceased Incarnate Word Sisters in the CCVI cemetery. Then there will be a reception for all in Centennial Hall, and to prove that we are on top of things, Krispy Kreme doughnuts will be served while they last.

LIGHT THE WAY
This annual lighting of the campuses is a longstanding tradition and the first ceremony of the season in San Antonio. The event begins at 7:30 p.m.on November 23rd in the McDermott Convocation
Center and ends with a procession around the campus as the Christmas lights come on, ending at Central Market on Broadway for refreshments and entertainment. An Alumni Section will be saved in the Convocation Center [please identify yourself], but we certainly cannot guarantee seating beyond 7:15 p.m.

CHRISTMAS EVE 2002
Just to let you know that Incarnate Word has two Masses on Christmas Eve. One at 5:00 p.m. in Our Lady’s Chapel and we try to focus on children and the family. Midnight Mass is in the Motherhouse Chapel and the pre-liturgy music begins around 11:30 p.m. Both Masses are available for alumni and friends but we cannot guarantee or hold seating, and the Fire Department frowns on overcrowding.

IWHS IN NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT
The National Blue Ribbon Award was presented to Andrew Noga, Principal of IWHS, and Sister Sally Mitchell, Dean, on October 4 in Washington, D.C. Two recent graduates of Incarnate Word High School, who are currently at Georgetown, joined them for the celebration. Missy Mendoza is a sophomore and Kathleen Oliver-Gurerra is a freshman.

And, the IWHS Chorale was asked to send a videotape to the White House for a possible invitation to sing there at Christmas.

IWHS HERITAGE ADDENDUM
“What was/is the names of the IWC/IWHS yearbooks? “ The Logos, The Star and Mt Erin
Before 1950 the College and IWHS were in the same yearbook, The Logos. Then IWHS had The Star, and now Mt Erin.

M.A.R.S. $1,000 AWARD AVAILABLE FOR ALUMNI NOMINATIONS
Purpose:
The University of the Incarnate Word McCracken Alumni Referral Scholarship was established with the goal to recognize UIW alumni as an effective vehicle in the recruitment of new students, while strengthening the connection of our graduates to the university. Alumni will be involved in identifying prospective students who will benefit from an Incarnate Word education and uphold the mission of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word.

Program:
Starting immediately, any graduate of UIW can nominate one prospective freshmen or transfer student per year to receive a $1000 voucher towards the cost of attendance in their first year beginning Fall 2003. Deadline for nominations February 1, 2003.

The universe is ours and MARS has come to earth! Effective immediately the McCracken Alumni Referral Scholarship [MARS] is available for alumni/ae nominations. Under this plan any UIW alumnus or alumna can nominate one prospective freshman or transfer student per year a scholarship voucher of $1,000 towards the cost of attendance in their first year beginning with the fall of 2003. An incoming student may not have more than one MARS voucher. The nominated student must meet the UIW admissions standards, complete all appropriate admissions forms, and the voucher is good for the first year only and is not renewable. However, an alumnus/a may nominate another student the following year. It is preferred that the voucher accompany the student’s application for admission, but it can be forwarded to the Admissions Office before or after acceptance. If the voucher does accompany the application, the $20 admissions application fee will be waived.

This new program is designed to encourage our graduates to continue the Incarnate Word legacy and provide a financial incentive as well. The deadline for submission of nominations for the fall semester is February 1, 2002. To receive a M.A.R.S. packet with additional guidelines contact dickm@universe.uiwtx.edu and materials will be sent to you. [Note: For those of you kind enough to inquire, Mr McCracken has NOT passed on and this is not a memorial scholarship. However, Mr McCracken will gladly accept donations for such a fund in anticipation of the eventuality.]

Aqua-mania: This is a 50 minute water workout designed to increase cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, strength and muscular endurance. Primarily in the shallow end of the pool, this is a good class for participants who want a great workout that does not involve swimming. Ai Chi is the water version of the flowing energy of Tai Chi, used for balance, deep breathing and relaxation!

F.I.T. for H2O: FUNctional Interval Training: This class will provide the participant with the ultimate fitness workout using aerobic intervals. Instructor will encourage and explain how to adjust resistance levels to improve strength and endurance. Along with anchoring and use of resistive equipment as desired, this method of aerobics strengthens the core while it tones the muscles of the extremities, conditions the heart & lungs, and even enhances your balance & coordination!

Aqua-itis: Get excited about the water and its benefits! This 45 minute water session is designed more for the beginner. The focus is on water walking, balance and endurance exercises. It is well suited for persons who are challenged physically or have difficulty with balance and coordination. It is based on principles of Aquatic Programs for the Arthritis Foundation, the Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Parkinson’s Foundation. Attendees may enter the water using the Swim Lift chair as needed; those needing individualized assistance may be asked to have their own caregiver with them. Nearby disabled parking is available.

Deep Water Dynamics and Swim Skills & Drills are no longer on our schedule due to your wishes.

All water exercises, done properly, improve flexibility and provide a safe environment for group exercise. The adjustable aquatic environment meets individual needs to strengthen the core 3-dimentionally, enhancing balance, coordination and endurance! And you can almost keep your hair dry!

UIW COOKBOOK
And don’t forget: UIW Cookbook by the Campus Ministry Office. The sample recipe to be sent this year with birthday greetings is for a German Chocolate pie, a favorite of Sister Teresa [M. Edward] Grabber, CCVI and the late Sister Maria Goretti Zehr, CCVI. The whole book is $10 [includes tax and postage].

NOW WE KNOW
German chocolate cake was so named because the recipe appeared on the back of the chocolate bar by the German Company. This was an American company, no Germans involved.

MARVIN REININGER : A TRIBUTE
October 4, 2002, the Feast of St Francis
We lost an important person in Incarnate Word history today. Mr. Marvin Reininger died peacefully in his sleep at 6:30 this morning. With the passage of time, not everyone on campus knows who this fine man was.

Marvin was the head of our facilities for 24 years. He retired from Incarnate Word College in 1983. His father-in-law, Cy Collins, was the first layman employee of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word and did all the repairs and maintenance for them for many, many years at the Motherhouse. The sisters were so fond of Mr. Collins, his wife, Viola, and their family they wanted them nearby and built a white stucco cottage for their residence between the Chapel and HEB Central Market facing Broadway. Cy and Viola were both orphans at the CCVI’s St Peter-St Joseph children’s home, employees, and were later married on campus. Among the Collins children was a daughter, Margaret. Margaret married Marvin Reininger and they had a family of eight children. Later in life Margaret worked for IWC as the Switchboard operator.

One of those children is Peter Reininger, now in charge of heating and air conditioning for the campus. When you see Peter you see Marvin! Peter's wife, Nancy, is a teacher and has been on our Education faculty. A daughter, Charmaine Williams, was named a UIW Alumna of Distinction recently, and daughter Brigid, and her husband Pat Gillock, are both BBA alumni of the university. Other children who as teenagers often came to help Marvin on campus were George, Tommy, Marvin Jr Margo and Nancy. IWC ladies would often “discover” missing light bulbs in the hope that one of the Reininger boys would come to replace it.

Marvin was a big man in stature and in spirit. He worked tirelessly and was always in good humor, no matter how many and how long the hours were. He and his assistant, Eugene LaBraque, were the only two men who did all the work on all the buildings and grounds, and made the repairs that Steve Heying and his small army of men and women now do. Marvin was a very familiar figure on campus. He was everywhere quietly going about his daily work and helping all members of the Incarnate Word community. Over the years he became very stooped because of back trouble but, nonetheless, continued to fulfill his everyday duties with thoroughness, dedication, kindness and endless patience.

After his retirement, the Reiningers moved to the Comfort area, where he enjoyed working with his garden and fruit trees. Margaret preceded him in death a few years ago. Marvin was a friend to everyone on campus, and was a very special man in the fabric of our daily lives. He will be missed, but not forgotten. [by Mendell Morgan Jr.]

Thanks to UIW student Vilma Holquin for sharing these thoughts for the seasons:

THANKSGIVING:
Adam and Eve had an ideal marriage. He didn't have to hear about all the men she could have married, and she didn't have to hear about the way his mother cooked.

CHRISTMAS:
A little boy was overheard praying: "Lord, if You can't make me a better boy, don't worry about it. I'm having a real good time like I am!"

A Sunday School teacher asked her class why Joseph and Mary took Jesus with them to Jerusalem. A small child replied: "They couldn't get a baby-sitter."
