Meet UIW Faculty
Dr. Renee Bellanger
Assistant Professor
Feik School of Pharmacy
Starting a new school of pharmacy is an exciting proposition and challenge. When
Dr. Johnson-Fannin asked me to join the pharmacy faculty as an Assistant
Professor in the fall of 2004, I was overjoyed and frightened at the same
time. What an honor to be able to give back to the pharmacy community of San Antonio
and south Texas. Teaching people who want to become pharmacists was
something I had been doing for a long time in the clinical arena, now I
was adding classroom teaching and it was in San Antonio.
Advancing healthcare in South Texas through education and deeds is how I feel the Feik School of Pharmacy and faculty will best serve the mission of UIW. All of the pharmacy practice and some of the pharmaceutical sciences faculty have a component of patient care in their weekly work. Helping patients and families make the best use of medications is a focus of that patient care. The curriculum is focused on patient care and competency in communicating with many people and cultures. A Spanish certification is offered to serve the needs of our community. After practicing pharmacy in San Antonio for over a decade, I am awed at the quality of education being provided to the students at UIW and know that we will have educated many excellent pharmacists in just a few years.
I am currently teaching pre-pharmacy students about the practice of pharmacy with the help of members of the pharmacy community. We talk to them about different ways to practice pharmacy and current conversations in pharmacy so that they can make good decisions on their careers. In the pharmacy program, I coordinate two courses that help the student communicate with others and understand their responsibility to patients and other healthcare providers as a professional. Next year, I will be teaching pharmacy therapeutics, including the approach to special patient groups, such as, pediatrics, neonatal, maternity and geriatrics.
