Meet UIW Faculty
Michael Mercer
Instructor
Communication Arts
Michael L. Mercer, 55, teaches journalism and mass communications courses
in the Department of Communication Arts, a division of the School of Interactive
Media and Design.
Mercer, a former newspaperman, also advises The Logos, the campus newspaper.
A native of Jackson, Tenn., Mercer holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Lambuth University in Jackson, and a master’s degree in communication from Auburn (Ala.) University. He came to UIW in fall 2001 after seven years teaching journalism at Auburn.
“I have a multifaceted role at UIW. Besides teaching, which I consider to be a form of ‘sharing,’ I have major responsibilities in helping to keep a periodic journal of the university’s contemporary history through the pages of The Logos.
“I take this job very seriously so I take an active role in ensuring students involved with the newspaper document campus issues, progress, news and provide information thorough stories and photographs. We stress objectivity on the news pages and encourage advocacy on the opinion pages. Then we try to ensure we present what we have gathered in an attractive package for consumption. I think the newspaper is an excellent way to keep track of how the university is doing on its mission of faith, service, innovation, truth and education.
“Another major job is advising students assigned to you in the major. Not only do they need signatures but more importantly they need advice or even for the most self-directed ones -- just someone to listen to their concerns.”
